Thanks for your question. In a standard tummy tuck there are two basic components. Skin tightening and Muscle repair. Particularly with childbearing the skin becomes loose and often does not shrink back. Tummy tuck cuts out this loose skin. With childbearing the abdominal wall stretches leading to a separation between the washboard (rectus) muscles of the abdomen. This Is called diastasis which is a separation although some confuse it for a hernia which it is not. Bringing the muscles back together (muscle repair) is also a common part of tummy tuck. Muscle repair in the appropriate slender candidate will flatten the abdominal wall.Unfortunately diet and exercise do not solve these problems. While it is always good to be at a healthy weight before surgery weight loss often makes loose skin looser and will not bring the muscles back together. One can choose to have a non muscle tightening tummy tuck. Your PS will help to guide you based on your goals, height weight and medical risk factors. I have included a tummy tuck link below which I hope will help.Best wishes.
The big difference will be in the WAIST line and FLAT ABDOMEN. If you do not have a muscle repair and your muscle is loose (with or without diastasis) most likely you will end up with a protruding abdomen and no waist. There are very very few female patients who do not need a muscle repair. The vast majority after pregnancies or/and significant weight loss or/and genetic protruding abdomen WILL need a MR. The majority of male patients do not need a muscle repair. Dr. Cardenas
