If you have low iron or anemia can you still have a BBL or tummy tuck done? (Photos)

Question

I am taking floradix! I recently had my hemoglobin check and they said it was 11.3 I wasn't sure if I was anemia. I felt very dizzy, lightheaded and sick when they did blood work on me. I wasn't aware that drawing blood can make a person become some ill I had passed out. I was told I can take iron pills and drink lots of fluids. I would like to have surgery but be on the safe side if you have any suggestions or advice please feel free to share. I'm interested in both procedure tummy tuck and BBL

Hello and thank you for your question. I appreciate your concern about low Hgb levels prior to a 360 degree liposuction with gluteal fat transfer (also known as "BBL"). Every surgeon has their requirement for how low the patient's Hgb can be prior to surgery. Honestly, it all depends on the surgeon's technique and level of experience with liposuction. Thank you very much for your question. You are slightly anemic. Before undergoing surgery it is advisable to substitute iron. Many women experience Anemia because of their menstrual bleeding. 11.3 however it is not a serious state so within a couple of weeks you should be ready to go.It should be more than 13.Be aware that you should be taking the iron pills for weeks after your surgery as well. Best to see a hematologist to "tune you up" so to speak. I require at least a hb of 11.8 or higher before clearing you for either B B L or Full TT. Unless you are in a safe range you may need in hospital blood transfusions after surgery....

You are best to be evaluated in person. If you are anemic, then you might want to get worked up and may need supplementation prior to surgery.

Thank you for your question and images. I recommend for any procedure to have a hemoglobine levels around 13 or higher. I always suggest to my patients with lower level of haemoglobin iron with folic acid and prior surgery have another blood work to evaluate the physical health.

Hi and thanks for your photos. No you are not safe if undergoing surgery with 11.3 of hemoglobin, you should have at least 12 grams or up. During surgery you will loss blood so we need high levels to compensate it and keep you out of complications.
I always advise my patients to intake, at least a month prior surgery, Iron wiht Folic Acid, Vitamin C and 1 Multivitaminic complex. If there are issues that condition you to this levels consult your gynecologist or your family doctor.

Thanks for the question and provided information as well.    In order to have this procedure is mandatory have a hemoglobin levels around 13 or higher, prior surgery you should have a blood work and other evaluation to validate your physical health.  I  recommend to book a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon  in your area to discuss the best options for your goals. Good  luck :)

Thanks for the great question! If you do have a history of anemia it's best to make sure your blood counts are in normal ranges before having surgery. Because a BBL is an elective procedure, it's important that all of your lab numbers are within a normal range before proceeding. I would continue to work with your primary care provider on iron supplementation until your numbers are where they need to be!Best,~Dr. Sieber
