Should I be concerned about my heart rate during surgery? Resting, my heart is normal. However, during exercises or cardio training, my heart rate sky rockets (high 160-170s). Never had surgery before, so I don't know what to expect. My pcp' said I'll be fine. Thank you!

Answer: Heart rate and surgery Thank you for your question. It is normal for your heart rate to increase during strenuous activity. As long as you are in good general health I would not anticipate any issues undergoing general anesthesia for a breast augmentation. Prior to surgery you will be evaluated by both your plastic surgeon and an anesthesiologist to confirm you are a good candidate. Best of luck, Dr. Kludt

Answer: Your primary care physician cleared you for surgery. Prior to any major surgery, your doctor should run tests to ensure that you are healthy and fit for surgery. Given that your pcp said you’ll be fine, there shouldn’t be a cause for concern. The elevated heart rate you experience during cardio exercise is normal. During your breast augmentation, your heart rate will be monitored closely, and if necessary, can be controlled with medications. Work with a board-certified plastic surgeon to ensure optimal results. Best of luck to you.
