Dr. Ram Kalus is a board-certified plastic surgeon in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, and Tel Aviv, Israel, with over 32 years in practice. He specializes in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery of the breast, body, and face, with a focus on breast enhancement procedures—including breast augmentation, mastopexy, breast reduction, and immediate and delayed breast reconstruction, along with revision breast reconstructions that may have been performed elsewhere in the past—as well as tummy tucks, labiaplasty, and complete mommy makeovers. The founder of Plastic Surgery of the Carolinas, as well as his practice in Tel Aviv in 2017, Dr. Kalus takes pride in spending as much time as necessary with his patients to answer all of their questions, so they are confident about their surgical journey, and to perform the best possible operation for them. “Much of the anxiety surrounding plastic surgery is the unknown, and fear of a bad outcome,” he says. “We try to dispel and address both concerns for every patient.” Dr. Kalus’s decision to become a plastic surgeon was due to his lifelong appreciation of aesthetics and the physical skill that’s required to create a beautiful outcome. “When I discovered my love of working with my hands and began to understand the power of reconstructive and aesthetic surgery, I became more and more drawn to the specialty,” explains Dr. Kalus. He is also inspired by the influence a person’s confidence in their physical appearance can have on their life. “The extent to which we can positively impact a patient’s self image with our knowledge and skill is both humbling and gratifying,” he says. Although he specializes in aesthetic surgery of the breast and face, Dr. Kalus makes no distinction between aesthetic and reconstructive surgery. “A breast reconstruction is no less an aesthetic operation than a breast augmentation. A reconstruction of a nose or forehead defect is no less an aesthetic procedure than a rhinoplasty or blepharoplasty,” he says. “My absolute cardinal principle is to leave the patient appearing as though they never had surgery.” Dr. Kalus also enjoys performing aesthetic facial reconstruction, as it respects the complex topography of the face as much as the anatomy, and makes every effort to leave the patient with an “unoperated” appearance. He is also known for his expertise in both primary and secondary labiaplasty. “This procedure is less frequently discussed, yet the need for which is clearly underserved from the standpoint of women suffering needlessly from labia minora hypertrophy, or disfigurement from improperly performed primary procedure,” explains Dr. Kalus. “This can be a source of significant improvement of quality of life for countless patients.” After earning his medical degree from Boston University, Dr. Kalus completed his general surgery training at Hartford Hospital and the University of Connecticut. He then underwent plastic surgery training at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire, the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, Massachusetts, and in Paris, France at the Hospital for Sick Children. Board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Kalus has been an active member of several prestigious medical societies. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an active member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Dr. Kalus also held the roles of Past President and Treasurer of the South Carolina Society of Plastic Surgeons.
I had thigh liposuction with Dr. Kalus. I chose him because he understood exactly what my concerns were. He was very kind and thorough during my initial consult and answered all my questions. He did not try to talk me into getting other procedures done and said that he would do 360 liposuction of my thighs just as I was hoping. Although I am not overweight, my legs were always 1-2 clothing sizes larger than my torp. Despite eating well and exercising regularly, I was not able to change the shape and size of my legs. I had difficulty getting any kind of muscle definition in my thighs due to the excess fat. It was hard to find pants that fit and I never felt comfortable wearing shorts. After decades of thinking about having liposuction, I finally decided to do it! Dr. Kalus was wonderful throughout my recovery. I saw him personally for each of my visits. He even called me back once when I had some questions about my recovery. From the first visit to my last, I always felt exceptionally well cared for. Everything healed well and I had no complications. My legs are now the same clothing size as my torso and it is much easier to find pants that fit. I have even gotten some shorts and shorter dresses! I no longer notice how out of proportion my thighs are compared to the rest of my body. continue to eat healthily and to exercise so that I can maintain my results. I am so grateful to Dr. Kalus for helping me to be comfortable with my figure!
This was my second experience with Dr. Kalus. I didn’t think he or his staff could be any more amazing than they were during my first experience but they absolutely were! Over the course of 7+ years, I have recommended multiple people to Dr. Kalus. He is always very welcoming, informative, and goes above and beyond to make sure you are happy with your results.
I have been coming to Dr Kalus since 2019. I've always had excellent results with any procedures Dr Kalus has preformed. He is fabulous and a very caring Dr., along with his entire staff. I always know I am in good hands at their facility.
I cannot thank Dr. Ram Kalus and staff enough. Dr. Kalus was able to reconstruct my breasts to a beautiful, natural, full appearance. There is something to say for a board certified surgeon whom has years of experience whom specializes in the aesthetic field. He was honest, personal, skilled, and professional. He answered all my questions, and concerns without judgement. I had minimal pain, and healed quickly. It took me time and effort to find an excellent surgeon. Many do not specialize in this field, please do your homework! On another note, I want to thank Dr. Kalus's staff. Particularly Reba whom made me feel comfortable. The entire team is nothing short of wonderful!
Dr Kalus has absolutely changed my life and confidence with my chin implant, chin liposuction, and a bit of liposuction to my cheeks. For reference, I am 5'7 tall and I weigh about 168 lbs at the time of my procedure. I have been on a weight loss journey for a few years, I started to notice that the weight was not coming off from underneath my chin and I have always been very unhappy with my side profile. This is completely my own opinion, but if you are considering getting a chin implant for a recessed chin - let me please urge you to see an Oral & Maxillofacial surgeon to see if you are a candidate for orthodontics, jaw surgery (genioplasty), etc. After going this route first I decided that the option that worked best for myself was the chin implant route. Entirely my own opinion again, but I personally waited to get liposuction until I was 20lbs away from my ideal weight. My weight has been stable for about two years and slowly trending downwards which is why I finally considered getting liposuction done. Getting my procedures done through Dr Kalus and his team was extremely easy. The nurses, front desk receptionists, and the scheduling team all did a phenomenal job. I had my procedure done at the Roper hospital in Mount Pleasant. All Roper/Kalus teams were incredible! My recovery has been going very well. I am still swollen (even in my 1 month post op pictures) and should have my final results at the 3 month post op mark. I was a little bruised after post op and my pain was minimal. I could go back to work by day 10. My smile continues to improve but I am noticing changes to it, which can be expected from this procedure. Week by week I continue to see results and I am so happy I chose Dr Kalus for my procedure. He truly is an amazing surgeon and body artist! I will make sure to update my after photos in either 3 months or a year. If you're considering any sort of plastic surgery, I highly recommend Dr Kalus!
I was referred to Dr. Kalus for my breast reduction surgery (size F-G). The first time I met him I immediately knew I was in good hands. He took the time to explain everything and made me feel comfortable. He is an amazing surgeon and took such care to ensure my results were exactly what I wanted, including using a special technique so I do not have vertical scars. He was so caring in the hours and days after surgery, and was available by phone or email when I had questions. The surgical results were outstanding, and he made sure to provide me with support to minimize scarring after the recovery period. I also want to commend his staff - his nurse, the office manager, and the office staff - who are all so caring and helpful. I am so happy with the results, and grateful that he was able to perform my surgery.
I went to Dr. Kalus for my consultation and left knowing that I found my surgeon. He is very upfront about everything and goes over anything and everything that you can think of regarding the procedure. He took the time to explain things thoroughly and talk about my dream outcomes to make sure he would be able to give me the look that I desired for. The whole office made me feel at ease and made sure to answer all my questions. I went through with the surgery and it was as smooth as it could have gone. I am absolutely stunned by how amazing they turned out. It is exactly what I wanted. I am only 4 days post op and have not taken any of the pain meds and have been completely fine. The recovery so far has been a breeze for me I have just been a little sore. Dr. Kalus and his staff are truly the best and I can't thank him enough.
I can not speak highly enough of Dr. Ram Kalus and his associates. When I began calling around to look into my procedure I never came across a staff as friendly, helpful, and welcoming as the office staff at Dr. Kalus’ office. He was so polite and informative. Answered every question I had with such patience. I never felt rushed at any appointment. I am beyond thrilled with my results.
I don’t know where to begin to describe my absolute joy in my dealings with Dr. Kalus. I am “Goldilocks” when it comes to physicians - they have to be “just right.” While it is clear that Dr. Kalus is a professional who takes his job VERY seriously, he also exudes a warmth, kindness and compassion that one doesn’t often find these days. You can tell that he really does take joy in his work. His initial consult with me (after I’d consulted with others) was as if he had all the time in the world to see me. We went over options I’d been given (one too risky, another too long and arduous over a course of surgeries) and much to my surprise, he came up with a third option that, as Goldilocks would say “was juuuust right!” Being a recovering cancer patient who’d already had a mastectomy, chemo AND radiation, the skin we had to work with was going to be a little unforgiving, so just shoving an implant in there wasn’t going to work. DIEP flap was another option that had been offered to me elsewhere, but I oscillated on pulling the trigger. Just as I was about to go for the DIEP flap, I was referred to Dr. Kalus for yet another consult in which he came up with a plant to sort of combing a lat flap with an implant. One surgery. Quick recovery time. He promised me that his goal is perfection, but we both knew going in, working with radiated skin, that it was possible that things would be slightly less than perfect. I’m not even entirely healed and I’m already ecstatic about the condition of both my “new” breast and the lift he performed on the right breast (so that they both be perky rather than one up and one not quite so up). I will update this review as I heal, but I doubt it will change much unless we are able to ADD stars. I am so pleased with his treatment of me - both as a patient and as a human being. He and his staff have my gratitude until the end of time! Updated on 16 Apr 2022: As with many reconstructed breasts where some or all of the skin used, I needed a little touch up here and there after some months of healing. Dr. Kalus addressed small areas of dimpling with fat grafting and (so far…it’s only been a few days) everything looks wonderful. I’d also requested some augmentation on my right breast and that looks outstanding as well. What initially impressed me about Dr. Kalus and his staff remains and has only been reinforced in my dealings with them. Every staff member in this practice, even in moments when they are intensely busy, treats you as if you are the only patient they have! They are warm, friendly, and caring, as is Dr. Kalus. This goes a VERY long way and is just as important as the perfectionism and professionalism of Dr. Kalus. Even elective surgery can be a little scary, but surgery that is necessary as a result of an illness such as cancer, can cause a great amount of fear and anxiety. Dr. Kalus and the entire staff do an excellent job of making you feel safe and cared for. If I ever decide that I want any type of plastic surgery once I’m done with all this cancer business, THIS is the doctor upon whom I will call.
I had a breast augmentation surgery with Dr.Kalus and could not be more happy with the results. Immediately after surgery felt little to no pain at all and was able to walk around. I had a check up the next morning after surgery where Dr.Kalus met with me to check incisions and make sure everything was looking right.I had a whole list of questions to ask him but even before I was able to ask he answered every question I had so simply, and was so informative about post op procedures. I can honestly say that there is not one thing I think can think of that could make me more happier with my breast augmentation. He took the inspiration pictures I sent him and followed it to a T. I cannot be more thankful for Dr.Kalus and his team that made my experience so amazing and exciting. A huge thanks to Dr.Kalus and his whole team that gave me the confidence I didn’t think i’d ever have.
Thank you for your inquiry and photos. Your question is a good one but not easy to completely answer without an evaluation in person by a board certified plastic surgeon. We all know what a pretty breast is supposed to look like and there is no justification for placing a scar around your nipple/areola. Since your inframammary fold is currently not well defined, your plastic surgeon will want to recreate the inframammary fold to define the bottom edge of your breast, which is where the incision for implant insertion should ideally be placed. The ideal breast will have a nipple to fold length of approximately 8-10 cm, and the distance from your suprasternal notch to the nipple can be a yea here from 17-22 cm. My recommendation is to find photos of Womens breasts you consider to be “ideal” and share those with your plastic surgeon. Make sure your plastic surgeon is someone with whom you feel comfortable and whose results resonate with your aesthetic concepts. Best of luck to you.
Thanks for your question. Usually we would see signs of necrosis within the first week. Occasionally, it may be a bit delayed and closer to two weeks, especially if the patient is a smoker or straightening and standing tall too soon. Hope that helps. Good luck.
A breast augmentation alone will not address your areolae or nipple. Both can be reduced separately or at the same time as a breast augmentation. I would recommend first addressing the nipples and areolae and achieving the breast appearance and dimensions you are hoping for. I would then consider breast augmentation three months later. Do your research and consult with an experienced board certified plastic surgeon whose results appeal to you from his or her Before and After gallery. Best of luck to you.
After this much time your implants are unlikely to come down. Please consult with an experienced board certified plastic surgeon with whom you feel comfortable and confident, and whose results you find to be aesthetically pleasing. Your implants need to be lowered surgically and your inframammary fold (the bottom of your breast) needs to be lowered. This means your scar will now be above the fold but still under your bra and bathing suit, and likely to heal inconspicuously. Best of luck to you.
Your plastic surgeon is correct. Your primary problem is too much skin and this needs to be corrected with a breast lift or “mastopexy”. When you augment to your desired size at the same time, you are placing a lot of tension on the skin incisions and risk complications. For patients such as you who know they want to be large breasted when all is said and done, I recommend a first stage breast lift to get your breasts to look pretty and perky and lifted and youthful. A smaller implant can be inserted at the same time with little risk, but this will cost you more. Once you have healed from your breast lift (about three months) you can undergo a breast augmentation to your desired size without the same worries of complications due to tension. Best of luck to you.
