I have my tumescent liposuction procedure scheduled for Aug 31st however I think I may be getting it within the next few days. The procedure will be done while I am fully awake and the fat will be harvested to augment my breast. My question is will I still be able to get my procedure done? I have yet to contact the office where I will have my procedure done.
Answer: Will I still be able to have tumescent liposuction and breast fat transfer while I have my menstrual period? Menstruation by itself is not a contraindication to surgery. This occurs frequently.Kenneth Hughes, MD, Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA

Answer: Will I still be able to have tumescent liposuction and breast fat transfer while I have my menstrual period? Yes, you can have the surgery during your menstrual period, but I recommend that my patients try to schedule surgeries more towards their mid-cycle. My approach would be to do the surgery under general anesthesia, monitored by a nurse anesthetist. Usually the fat can be harvested from the flank area and/or abdomen. I find that this approach for my patients is more comfortable and more controlled. Make sure that you are being monitored with EKG, etc during and after surgery. Also, make sure you wear support stocking post-op and start mobilization ASAP...you don't want a blood clot in you calves. Good luck!

Answer: Surgery Every surgeon has his or her own criteria. I recommend an in-office examination as well as a detailed discussion with a surgeon who you are comfortable with. Finally, make sure your surgeon is a Double-Board Certified Plastic Surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS), a member of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).Best,Dr. DesaiBeverly Hills Institute for Aesthetic Plastic SurgeryHarvard Educated, Beverly Hills & Miami Beach TrainedDouble Board-Certified, Double Fellowship-Trained Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon

Answer: Will I still be able to have tumescent liposuction and breast fat transfer while I have my menstrual period? Thank you for your question. I see no reason why you cannot have your procedure done during your period. What I tell my patients, that they must not insert a tampon, use only a pad. I personally like to use intravenous sedation for my liposuction cases, since I always sculpt the anatomical area from where the fat is harvested from. Unless you are significantly overweight, your surgeon can collect fat from the middle fat layer under local only without much discomfort. Injecting the fat into the breasts can be quite painful, I do not inject local into the breasts, another reason for using IV sedation. Good luck with your surgery.

Answer: Fat transfer grafting to breasts and menstruation Thank you for asking. Menstruation typically is not an issue with these procedures. Talk with your board certified (by the American Board of Plastic Surgery) plastic surgeon to discuss your specific case. Best wishes!
