I had 400cc silicone subpectoral implants placed 5 years ago. 2 months ago, I had some itching at the incision site only on the right breast and thought it was an allergy to my bra. 3 days ago my fingers became red, itchy and painfully swollen whenever I touched something cold. Today, I had a dull ache in the lower right quadrant of my right breast that has progressed to a radiating, warm pain in the rib area, pec and up spread to my right arm, towards my jaw, and my back. Also swelling on side.
Answer: Could my implant have ruptured if I have progressive radiating pain in breasts and hands 5 years post breast implants? The symptoms you are describing are a bit non-specific as to whether your implant has ruptured. They actually are a bit concerning for a heart problem. I would suggest being examined to rule out cardiac issues right away and then have your plastic surgeon examine your breast and if necessary order some imaging studies to see if the implant is intact. They’ll guide you through the next steps if it is ruptured.

Answer: Rupture implant Dear annonann88,I understand your concern. However, without a proper assessment it would be difficult to determine what is wrong. It is best that you visit your plastic surgeon for further assessment. Only after thorough examination you can get proper recommendations and advice.Daniel Barrett, MD Certified, American Board of Plastic Surgery Member, American Society of Plastic Surgery Member, American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery

Answer: Breast implant issues Dear Annonann,Thanks for the photo and description. Your symptoms are quite atypical for an implant rupture so I highly doubt that this would be causing your issues. I would suggest several things:Follow up with your plastic surgeon so they can assess the breast and decide if a sonogram or MRi is suggested. See your primary care physician for their input as well.Hope you feel better.Dr T

Answer: Mixed symptoms 5 years after breasts augmentation Dear Ann, Posting full front and side view pictures of your breasts would have been helpful. The symptoms that you describe can be partially, connected to the breasts augmentation procedure, not necessarily because of rapture of implants, but rather because of capsule contracture. The symptoms of the hands , sound more like Raynaud's syndrome . The symptoms of the dull ache radiating towards the jaw , sound unrelated to the breasts augmentation. So, you should consult with your family doctor in regard to these symptoms. Concerning the breasts symptoms, you should consult with your plastic surgeon or any other experienced board certified plastic surgeon and have your breasts examined to rule out capsule contracture or lateral displacement of the implants , that can explain your breasts symptoms. Best of luck, Dr Widder

Answer: Could my implant have ruptured if I have progressive radiating pain in breasts and hands 5 years post breast implants? Thank you for sharing your question and photograph. The symptoms you describe would not be indicative of an implant rupture and I would recommend seeing your PCP or family doctor first for an in-person examination.
