When do doctors use two different size implants? In other words, what cc difference is enough asymmetry to use diff implants? If my right breast is 25cc more than my left breast, is it necessary to use two different implants or would using the same implant be okay?
Answer: Implant sizing Hello, Every woman's breasts are different. Sometimes one breast may be larger smaller, rounder, perkier, etc. Surgeons sometimes use different sized implants to balance out whatever asymmetry you might have. Implants come in different sizes, diameters, etc. If your surgeon is recommending two different sized implants, you should trust him/her. In some cases it is possible to balance out the symmetry of the breasts and use the same size implants when the patient initially had some sort of asymmetry but you have to keep in mind that it usually will involve a more complex surgery with pocket modification, etc. For more complex surgeries your surgery will cost the surgery center more, in turn, costing you more for the procedure. Go with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon that you trust for your procedure. Hope this helps. Best Wishes, Dr. Lane Smith Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Las Vegas, NV

Answer: How many CC difference is enough to use different implants? It is extremely rare to see identical breasts. Asymmetry is the norm, and if it is noticeable to you, then it is worth having the conversation of using different size implants. A small amount of asymmetry is very acceptable post-op. However, if I think I can make my patient more symmetrical, then I will suggest using adjacent size implants. The volume difference varies and can range from 10 cc's to 50 cc's. Good luck!

Answer: How many CC difference is enough to use different implants? Without the advantage of viewing before and after photos or an in-office exam, providing a specific answer to your question is problematic. I would not recommend tissue transfer breast to breast as the rate of resorption of the grafted tissue will be an issue. If there is a small difference between the breasts, different sized implants or a small reduction on the larger side may be reasonable. Twenty-five cc's is not much of a visual difference. I would leave it up to your board certified plastic surgeon to select the best option for you based upon his/her experience, training, education, and aesthetic talents.Kenneth Hughes, MD, Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA

Answer: Breast Asymmetry It is very common for women to have breast asymmetry. I often use two different-sized implants to improve the asymmetry however it usually does not completely solve the problem. Many times the asymmetry is still present but improved. I use implant sizers during every one of my surgeries to check if it's better to use the same size or different sizes. I recommend you leave it up to the plastic's surgeon's expertise to pick the sizes. Good luck!
