Lip bruising and lumps after lip fillers. Is this a normal reaction? (photo)

I had lip fillers done yesterday (not my first time) and noticed I have some lumps and bumps and bruising outside of the normal swelling I usually have. I’m not as concerned about the bruising as I am the lumps. I have two hard ones in my lower lip and many small ones along the upper lip border. Is this a normal reaction? I’ve never experienced this side effect before.

There can be both swelling and lumps after lip injections which can last 1 to 2 weeks. You can apply firm pressure between two fingers on the lips for a few days, for 5 minutes a time, in order to help decrease swelling and even out the lumps. To diminish the bruising, I recommend using LightStim LED or, in more significant cases, a vascular laser or IPL treatment. Arnica with Bromelain ("Arnika Forte") can also be taken to help speed up the healing.If you're unhappy with your final results after 2 weeks, you can have the filler dissolved and try a different technique next time. Thank you for your question.It may be bruising inside the lip or swelling. I would give it a week to calm down, if it doesn't resolve return to your injector to have the evaluate it in person.

Bruising and swelling can occur after filler treatments.  It can take up to two weeks for the filler to settle and for you to see your final results.  If after that time you have concerns, visit with your surgeon for an evaluation.

Hello - thank you for the photo and questions. Yes, it is completely normal to have that amount of bruising, swelling, and lumpiness after lip fillers. If after 2 weeks you still have lumps, make an appointment with your provider to massage those lumps out. Sometimes filler will clump up a bit but it just needs some aggressive massaging!

It usually takes 1-2 weeks for swelling and bruising to go down and lumps and bumps to smooth out. You can massage the lumps to help smooth them out. If it has been over 2 weeks and the lumps and bumps are visible or bothering you and an HA filler was used, you can have it dissolved with hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down HA fillers. You may need more than 1 session. Good luck

Bruising, lumps, stiffness, and chapped lips are all very common after lip injections.  However, if the lumps are very large and visible, it may not be normal.  In either case, without seeing you in person, it is difficult to evaluate.  I would recommend scheduling a follow up with your injector just to be sure everything is as expected.  Most lumps can simply be massaged out, but again, your injector will be able to evaluate and decide the best treatment.

Bruising and swelling is very normal after fillers. You do not mention what type of filler you had. If it was a Juvederm type of filler rest assured that all you need to do is to gently massage the area between your fingers a couple of times a day. If the lumps are still there in a week or so, you should contact the physician that injected your lips for advice.

Hey there thanks for the question! It certainly can be normal for lumps form bruising to occur in the lips! Bit filler can also collect in to lumps. Are the lumps visible t you or something you can feel? If the latter you may not need any further treatment, but if the lumps remain and are visible, you should see your injector to consider hylase treatment.

There are times that the lumps are swelling or product that has been misplaced.  I would ice and massage the area and see if it goes away.  If it still remains after one week I would return to my treating physician for review.  Best, Dr. Green
