Q: Does Voluma work immediately on “smokers lines?” (Photo)
Answered by Heather ArchibaldMarch 5, 2019

A: Voluma is a very thick, structural product that is more suited for deep placement on the bone for cheeks, jawline, and chin.  It is not a product to be used for superficial lip lines.  For that area, I would chose Belotero or Volbella because they are much thinner and will integrate with your tissue better.  However, even when choosing Belotero or Volbella, I must prefer the combination of heavy microneedling with PRP x3 treatments to reduce the lines and Botox to maintain the results and prevent further lines.  A final option would be to place a thinner filler like Volbella or Vollure into the lip/lip border itself to provide structure.  This does not completely erase the lines, but definitely softens them.

Q: I've had bruising then healing only to present again 5 days after Botox injections in my crows feet.
Answered by Heather ArchibaldMarch 5, 2019

A: The crow's feet have a much higher bruising potential than other areas of the face when using neurotoxins due to the high vascularity of this area.  There are many small veins that run through this area, and even in the most experienced hands, bruising can occur.  Some patients can even go multiple treatments without bruising and then have it happen randomly at another treatment.  Some things you can do to reduce the chances of bruising include avoiding blood thinners like Aspirin and Ibuprofen products as well as Tumeric, Fish oil, Vitamin E, Omega-3's, St. John's Wort, and Garlic supplements 3-5 days before and after injections.  Also, you can start taking an Arnica supplement 3-5 days before and after injections.  Finally, avoiding alcohol and exercise for 24 hours can help.

Q: Could I do Volbella to place more filler in my lips?
Answered by Heather ArchibaldMarch 5, 2019

A: Volbella is a very fine filler that is mostly used for lip border definition and hydration to the lips.  It really does not provide much plumping factor.  If you're looking to add a slight bit more definition to the border of the lips, then Volbella could be a good option.  However, if you are looking to add a bit more plump, then I would not recommend it, as you likely will not see the change you're looking for.  I would ask your injector if they split syringes and do a half syringe of Vollure, or, as you stated, find another place in the face to put the remaining product.

Q: Can Botox lower the eyebrows like so? (photos)
Answered by Heather ArchibaldMarch 5, 2019

A: Although we cannot place Botox to cause a furrow, we can place the Botox lower on the forehead in order to depress the brows slightly.  This basically flattens them out and creates a "heavier" brow.  This is usually what we try to avoid in women to avoid flattening their arch.  However, on men, this is not so much of an issue, and in your case, requested.  Placing Botox near/above the eyebrows will actually raise them slightly, since the corrugates and procerus muscles normally act to depress the brows.

Q: First time Botox. When the doctor says it lasts 2-3 months for first time pt, does that mean 2-3 months from injection?
Answered by Heather ArchibaldMarch 5, 2019

A: If dosed appropriately, Botox should last 3-4 months, sometimes slightly less in the forehead.  If it is not lasting that long, you are likely being underdosed.  There has been some studies that have suggested that too small of dosage done more often can lead to antibody formation (resistance).  But yes, the quoted time is usually from time of injection.
