I have been using the silicone gel for my post operative care. I had slashes that did not follow the normal crows feet area, but rather extend out past by brow. Should I continue since I have enough gel for another 6 months, or should I use in the summer only? Can the sun still damage the scars after one year?
Answer: Scars Scars continue to evolve over at least a year. The thinner the skin, the thinner the scar. Upper eyelid scars typically are very feint if visible at all after a year. If the incision was extended laterally to help with hooding, it may take a year for the lines to settle down because the skin is thicker in this area. If the "slashes" are in line with the crow's feet wrinkles they should be hardly noticeable after a year. Applying intermittent pressure to the area as well as rubbing it frequently will also help. Be sure to apply sunscreen to the area. You don't mention your skin type which can definitely have an effect on healing. For darker skin, it may take a little longer. Answer: Scar Treatment Upper blepharoplasty incisions tend to heal beautifully; the thinner the skin, the thinner the scar.I have not had a patient concerned with an upper blepharoplasty scar, but if it remains aesthetically bothersome, it is generally safe to continue using BioCorneum for up to a year after surgery, as scars can continue to evolve and improve during this time. Furthermore, the SPF 30 in BioCorneum will help protect the scar from UV damage during the scar maturation period. After one year, if you are unhappy with the scars, BioCorneum or silicone gels are unlikely to be beneficial and you should meet with a provider to discuss options such as scar revision, lasers, etc. Krishna Vyas, MD, PhD, MHSHarvard, Hopkins, & Mayo Clinic Trained Aesthetic Plastic SurgeonNew York, New York

Answer: Plato's Scar Therapy Mini Kit for eyelid scars I would use a combination of Plato's Scar Serum and Plato's Dark Scar Corrector. You may need laser on the lateral eyelids to reduce scarring. Best, Dr. KaramanoukianLos Angeles

Answer: I would consider scar revision after a year But I would like to see photos of the scars first. The scars that extend past the eye bone don't heal well. A browlift is a better alternative if you have that much extra skin that skin incision needs to pass the eye bone.

Answer: Scars on Eyelids I suggest posting photos or coming in for an in person evaluation. In my experience topical creams are only minimally effective for scars, although I do have all my patients on biocorneum regardless. Most of my patients get laser treatments to improve the texture and appearance of scars. Best, Dr. Emer.

Answer: I remember you photos from shortly after your surgery-terrible. I hope you have progressed after your surgery. Generally there should be no value in continuing to use silicone gel. If you scars have persisted to be unacceptable, it is probably time to consider surgical revision.
