I generally ask my patients to stop all supplements 10 days before surgery and 10 days after. Multi-vitmains are fine as are collagen supplements. It is always best however to check with your plastics surgeon to determine what your surgeons thoughts are.Hope that helps.
Dear getfit_2017,you should discuss it with your plastic surgeon. Some surgeons will ask their patients to stop taking all supplements before the surgery. Daniel Barrett, MD, MHA, MS Certified, American Board of Plastic Surgery Member, Am. Society of Plastic Surgery
Each plastic surgeon will present patients with pre and post-operative guidelines specifying medications, supplements, vitamins, herbs, and etc. to refrain from using before and after surgery. You should follow you plastic surgeon's advice. I advise my patients to STOP ALL sources of Vitamin E, e.g., Vitamin E pills, multivitamins, Slim Fast Ensure Plus, all herbs, e.g. Ginko, Garlic, Ginseng, Natural or health preparations e.g. bee’s pollen, protein powders, and supplements 1 week before surgery.Kenneth Hughes, MD, Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA
Supplements may contain a variety of substances that can cause problems with blood coagulation and with anesthesia. It is recommended that all herbal supplements be stopped 2 weeks before elective surgery. You should discuss what medications, supplements, and vitamins you are taking, both prescription and over the counter, with your plastic surgeon and have him or her decide what you should and should not be taking. Your surgeon should be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and ideally a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). Robert Singer, MD FACS La Jolla, California
In my experience I have not had issues with patients taking collagen. However, talk with your surgeon and let him or her know what you are taking. He or she may want lab-work to ensure that your electrolytes are within normal limits for surgery. Communication is key!
It is recommended to stop supplements 2 weeks prior to surgery. This is in the anesthesia guidelines. Check in with your surgeon for his instructions.
