There is no specific time that you have to wait after tummy tuck to travel but it is usually a good idea to wait a day or two because in the first 24-48 hrs is when the risk for bleeding or other serious complications is the highest. That being said most patients will not feel up to traveling very far for the first 5-7 days because that is when they are the most sore. If you are at a large airport you may have to walk significant distances when you are really sore and tired. Also, If you are traveling a long distance you would want to make sure that your plastic surgeon knows so that so they can make sure you are on a blood thinner such as lovenox to decrease the risk of a blood clot..Best of Luck on Your Journey,Dr. AmspacherChief of Surgery Mosaic LifeCare Hospitals and Clinics
Dear L.Roma,Thank you for your question regarding air travel after a tummy tuck procedure. The timing for air travel following a tummy tuck can vary depending on several factors, and it is crucial to follow the guidance of your plastic surgeon for a safe and comfortable journey back home. While it is true that some patients may be able to travel by air as early as five days after a tummy tuck, this timeline is not a one-size-fits-all recommendation. The ability to travel largely depends on individual healing progress, the extent of the surgery, and your surgeon's evaluation of your specific case. After a tummy tuck, your body needs time to recover and heal. It is common to experience swelling, discomfort, and limited mobility in the initial post-operative period. Traveling too soon, particularly by air, can potentially exacerbate these symptoms and increase the risk of complications. To ensure a safe and smooth travel experience, it is crucial to consult with your plastic surgeon before making any travel arrangements. Your surgeon will assess your healing progress, evaluate any potential risks, and provide personalized recommendations based on your unique situation. They may consider factors such as the extent of your tummy tuck, your overall health, the presence of drains or sutures, and your ability to move and sit comfortably for an extended period. Based on their evaluation, they will provide you with the most appropriate timeline for air travel. It is important to prioritize your safety and well-being during the recovery phase. If your plastic surgeon advises against air travel at the five-day mark, it is essential to respect their professional advice. Postponing your travel plans may be necessary to allow for optimal healing and minimize any potential complications.Safe travels and a smooth recovery!Sincerely,J. Thanks for the question. We recommend to wait at least 7 days after a tummy tuck procedure before traveling by air. However, this can vary based on the individual and the extent of the surgery. And I recommend you contact a Board Certified Surgeon for consultation. I wish you all the best.
It would be best to follow the instructions provided to you by your surgeon. Depending on the extent of correction performed, 5 days may be a bit too early. Please note that for your safety, you may want to consider choosing a surgeon who is closer to you. This is because if a concern arises during your recovery, you can more easily see them in person for an assessment.
I would reccomened waiting at minimum 1 week to travel, but if you can wait 2 weeks that would be best. Especially if you have drains in. Hope that helps!
After a tummy tuck it is advisable not to fly for 10-14 or as advised by your surgeon. The main concern is an increased risk of blood clots. If you do fly you may want to consider wearing compression stockings, rotating ankles while seated, and walk around a little when it is safe to do so. Depending on your health history your physician may suggest a blood thinning medication such as aspirin, but it is best to first check with her/him before taking anything.
Hello! Yes that is correct you should wait about 5 days after your surgery or if you had a more complicated case we recommend 7-10 days. Best of Luck!Dr. Julia Spears MD
Hello @L.Roma, and thank you for your question. Well, it is pertinent to note that this depends more on the doctor's recommendations, since not all surgical techniques are the same. After liposuction, it is important that the patient understands that he or she will need care for a few days. Best wishes! Alan Gonzalez MD, FACS. Hi thanks for your question It depends flight time 3-4 hours flight: after 7 daysMore than 4 hours: 10 days you need
Thank you for your question. I typically recommend my patients to be around for a minimum of 7 days. In most patients I place drains which usually come out on day 6 and 7. If the flight is a bit of a longer flight I recommend patients getting up and walking. Make sure you are pumping your ankles while sitting on the plane. Each Surgeon will have their own protocol they wish you to follow so I would suggest speaking and following your Surgeon's directions. Best of luck to you.
