Lumps after lip filler for about 7 years. What should I do instead? (photo)

Okay I've been doing lip filler for about 7 years. I love the way it looks. I've had amazing injectors do my lips. I've spent thousands of dollars per syringe of Juvéderm, Restylane, kiss, prior to filler I had no top lip. I went to an a new injector thinking it was my old one( it was not) I ended up getting my filler dissolved and starting over..two years later it's superficial once again, you can see the lumps. It looks awful. I feel like I keep wasting my money. What should I do instead??

Hello, and thank you for your question. Sometimes filler over time can either migrate or cause lumps under the surface. This can depend on the type of filler used, technique, or even your body’s immune response. If you noticed this has happened more with one specific type of filler, then it would be best to avoid that filler. Instead of dissolving the entire lip, you can also jus dissolve the lump itself. If it does not respond, it could be a Granuloma or a nodule, which do not respond to hyaluronidase injections. I would recommend consulting a healthcare provider who can consult with you in-person and discuss the best options for you.

The lumps that you are seeing are indeed superficially placed filler. Your provider can use a dissolving agent to break down the lumps. After that, I would suggest only going to an injector you know and trust moving forward. It is important to stay with a provider who is familiar with your situation and anatomical features.

There is no doubt that long term use of fillers for lip augmentation will produce unwanted consequences like lumps and other irregularities. In many cases these lumps may need direct surgical excision. Lip lift, in some cases, may be considered as a more permanent solution but it has its own price, scar. Hope this helps.

The lump definitely looks like it is migrated filler. I would go to see someone about dissolving it if you can't get it to improve yourself with very aggressive massage. I'm not sure how to address your other questions in terms of "wasting money" and what to do instead. You can definitely keep getting lip filler, making sure you go to a good injector who will hopefully help you manage things like this and who will stop when you are "overfilled" to minimize risk of migration. If you want to try something else entirely, another option would be to consider fat grafting or SMAS graft (surgical) to the lips for more "permanent" volume that is natural vs. lip lift, depending on what your goals are.

From your photo it appears that the lumps are superficial filler.  You can have then dissolved with hyaluronidase.  Though there are risks to having fillers injected, they can be kept to a minimum by selecting an experienced injector.  Ask to see before/after photos and discuss your concerns before treatment.
