Tonsillectomy after lip filler?

Hello, I have a maybe unusual question. I have an appointed for lip filler (bottom lip) end of week. And unfortunately seems like I will also need to have tonsillectomy done in 15 days after, is there any issues with migration or infection ?

Hello, and thank you for your question. If you have a planned surgery, it is best to wait on getting lip filler, especially since this will involve the inside of your mouth. In general, it is advised to avoid dental procedures for 2 weeks before and after getting dermal filler as the risk for infection increases. This can also be the case for surgery. You could always consult with your surgeon to discuss if it is ok to move forward with treatment or if it should be postponed.

Hi baki! Don't do it! And I mean it for two reasons, one being that it can definitely still migrate because there will be a fair amount of pressure on certain parts of the lips, and two because there is a higher risk of infection doing the two that close with each other.

Hello baki88! My name is Jessica, I am a physician assistant, and one of the providers at Shah Facial Plastics. This is a great question. In general, after receiving lip filler it takes 1-2 weeks for the swelling to go down. Based on your timeline, there should not be any contraindications to having both procedures. However, if possible, I would recommend receiving lip filler after having the tonsillectomy to prevent any migration or other potential side effects. I hope this helps and best of luck!

It is advisable to wait at least four to six weeks after undergoing a tonsillectomy before considering lip filler injections. This is because any surgical procedure, including dental interventions like a tonsillectomy, can potentially introduce bacteria into the bloodstream. These bacteria can settle on the lip filler and cause an infection. 
Infected lip filler must often be dissolved and treated with antibiotics or steroids.

Very occasionally after dental or oral work, a filler can swell up a bit due to the increased microbial flora release that occurs, so I'd suggest to do the lip filler at least 2 weeks after the tonsillectomy. Best to chat with your dermatologist further if you have any more questions.

Hold off on doing your filler until you have healed from the surgery. First, your mouth will be stretched while in surgery. Second, you do not want to risk bacteria from the mouth infecting the filler.

Since you know when you'll be having your tonsillectomy it is best to proceed with that as planned.  Once completely healed you can then have your lip filler treatment.  Though there isn't a high risk, the pressure placed on the lips during your surgery could impact your lip filler results since it's so close to the treatment date.

The most conservative approach would be waiting until you are healed from your tonsillectomy prior to getting lip filler. During a tonsillectomy a mouth guard is placed around the teeth and lips which may put a small amount of stretch on the lip. This could result in a small risk of interfering with the lip filler because dermal fillers settle into place for the first 3 weeks after placement.
