Stitches in lips ok to get lip injection?

Question

I have stitches on my bottom lip in the center. I got them when I was a kid, got a accident. I was wondering if this will affect in any way by getting lip injections? Is it safe? I was thinking just to get lip injection on the top and sides of the bottom. Will the injection irritate or have complications because of the stitches in my lip?

Plastic surgeons and dermatologist commonly treat patients with lip injections who also have an old scar. The physician wouldn't perform cosmetic injections if it's a recent injury or if there are signs of inflammation already. Depending on the appearance and location of the scar, the filler can be directly placed in the scar to improve the appearance or avoided as necessary. If you currently have stitches in the lips you should wait to get injections.  There is no reason for a cosmetic treatment when you are treating something medically. If you have a scar from the past and want injections, that is completely fine for injections at this time.  Best, Dr. Emer.

Thank you for your question.  The stitches you had as a child would have dissolved long ago.  What you are seeing now is the scar from your accident.  Lip injections are safe to do, but the scar could interfere with the final shape. Select a well qualified, board certified plastic surgeon, and let them know about you previous accident.  There is no reason you shouldn't be able to achieve a nice result.  Best of luck.

Thank you for your excellent question.  Stitches placed in your lower lip as a kid have dissolved and do not pose any issues for a lip augmentation using dermal fillers.  Be sure to see a board certified plastic surgeon in consultation, they can provide a thorough exam to maximize your results.  Hope this helps.

Hello Angelb7,The stitches you had as a kid have long since dissolved.  Permanent ones are not used in the deep tissue in the lip area.  The previous scar can affect how evenly the filler can be injected into that area, so it might take some effort to get the result your are going for.  There are a few risks to lip injections which your injector can discuss, but having had a previous scar is not going to add any risk.  In fact, we sometimes treat depressed scars with fillers to make them look better.  I would recommend you mention your previous trauma to your physician injector so this can be considered when performing the injection.  I hope this helps and good luck.
