The only major issue I have with my nose is a dorsal hump. Fortunately, I can breathe through both nostrils so I doubt I have a deviated septum since I've never injured my nose. I heard about the procedure of a "microrhinoplasty". This seems to be shorter in length and with a quicker recovery time than a traditional rhinoplasty but I'm worried it's too good to be true.
Answer: Dorsal Hump If the hump is really small then it can be addressed under local anesthesia but just shaving off the cartilage and rasping the bone. However, the majority of hump removals require osteotomies as well (breaking the bones) and that is more involved. RegardsDr. J

Answer: Is a micro-rhinoplasty right for me? There's no such a thing as "micro-Rhinoplasty". Rhinoplasty is a very challenging procedure that not all Plastic Surgeons perform, that requires training, experience, skill and talent to perform. With that said in order to achieve the best possible result- all elements of the nose should be addressed. In the right hands- it can be performed through a closed technique.

Answer: Is a micro-rhinoplasty right for me? Thank you for posting your interesting question. A dorsal hump can be removed using a closed rhinoplasty approach whichp has a shorter recovery time than the open rhinoplasty, which can be helpful for narrowing the nasal tip. I recommend that you have a consultation with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon who is very experienced with rhinoplasty. Best wishes, Richard Wellington Swift, M.D., F.A.C.S.

Answer: Microrhinoplasty- does it exist? There is no such a thing as microrhinoplasty surgery. While removal of the dorsal hump may be the only thing you desire, for surgeon it may involve several things: taking the hump down, squeezing the nasal bones together to prevent a gap between the bones and appearance of a squared, widened dorsum, possibly reinforcing the connection of the cartilages to the bones to prevent nasal valve problems and nasal obstruction, and possibly correcting septal deviation if one is present. Not to imply that every patient with dorsal humps needs all these things done, but many do. So “microsurgery” as you call it may not be so “micro” afterall, if you want your surgery to be performed diligently. I suggest you select a rhinoplasty specialist who you trust and discuss everything in person.

Answer: Rhinoplasty If you wish for your hump to be lowered, the traditional techniques to lower the cartilaginous portion of the hump entail using a knife or scissors. Look into the VAPOR Nose option that does not entail using a knife or scissors. The remaining bony hump can be lowered with a rasp and/or osteotome. Even though you are breathing well through your nose, the inside of your nose MUST be examined.
