Answer: Addressing Chest Fat vs. Gynecomastia Thank you for your question regarding whether you have chest fat or gynecomastia. Thank you for your history and your pictures. By definition, male gynecomastia is the presence of breast tissue. Gynecomastia or male breast tissue is usually firm and hard. This feels like a firm mass usually directlyusually directly underneath the nipple. The mass can be small or large. The mass feels like a walnut or a marble. The breast mass can be on one side or both sides. The causes of male breast tissue or gynecomastia are multiple including several common, medications, excessive alcohol, and marijuana. However, in most cases of gynecomastia, the cause is unknown. If your chest is soft (I am not hard like gynecomastia), then you probably just have chest fat. This is what I believe you have. Either way the treatment is plastic surgery. Most cases of chest fat or gynecomastia, it can be treated with the VASER Liposuction. VASER Liposuction uses ultrasonic energy to melt fat. During VASER liposuction, VASER energy is applied to melt the fat and/or breast tissue. Usually, the VASER removes a problem area. If the VASER cannot remove or melt the breast tissue, a small incision is placed around the areola and the solid gynecomastia breast issue is removed. I hope this helps to answer your question whether you have chest fat or male breast gynecomastia. If you have any more questions regarding male breast gynecomastia, please contact my office. Sincerely, J. Timothy Katzen, MD, FACS, FICS Board Certified Plastic Surgeon

Answer: Fat vs Gynecomastia Being able to decipher whether there is gynecomastia or hard glandular tissue beneath the small amount of fat you have on your chest would require an in-person exam. If you feel hard tissue when you pinch deep into the breast tissue might be a clue too. I would recommend continuing to work towards your goal weight and seeing what's left when you are at goal. If the fullness you see is still displeasing to you, seek the opinion of a board-certified plastic surgeon. I use a combination of excision and Vaser liposuction in the whole chest. The Vaser machine melts that fat first and helps delineate the glandular tissue from the fat so it can be removed appropriately. The Vaser liposuction is great for the extra fat even if you don't need glandular tissue removed.
