I recommend silicone scar care products for all of our patients who undergo a Tummy Tuck. Application of the product daily begins at 4-5 weeks post-op. Silicone products are available in gel form, solid stick (such as Prosil), and as strips (embrace). All are effective in post-operative scar care. The silicone strips have the advantage of adding a bit of pressure, and I find them more effective for treating raised (hypertrophic) scars. The strips are a bit more work as they have to be applied and kept in place. For our patients who appear to be forming raised scars, I most frequently recommend using the gel or solid stick during the day and the strips at night.Best regards,Andrew Lyos, MD, FACS
Thank you for your question, my patients generally use a silicone based gel called Kelo-Cote. This acts as a protective layer over the scar and gradually reduces the redness and smooths out the skin. It will improve the appearance of the scar and prevents excessive scar formation. Please speak with your surgeon in regards to their aftercare policy as each clinic has different advice that works for them. All the best
In general, scarring is a produce of genetics. Some people are good scar formers and others are poor scar formers. The scar will fade over a year’s time. There is no one cream that is better than another.Kenneth Hughes, MD, Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA
We recommend silagen or bioconreum or pracasil which are silicone based and work well. Use 2 times a day for 3 months. Can use low power IPL (intense pulsed light) or other lasers to help too. Good Luck!
Generally, silicone products are recommended for scar management a few weeks post-op. Silicone has shown more benefits compared to other topical creams and is usually always available. However, your surgeon is your best resource for advice like this. Each surgeon has his/her own protocols when it comes to post-op management. Consult with your surgeon regarding this.
The only scar cream with proper scientific support for its use is Solution for Scars. Silicone creams and oils help to keep moisture in the scar, which makes it softer and more pliable. Solution for scars has been shown, in a randomised double blinded trial, to help prevent scars thickening up and reduce the redness. It is available from Science of Skin.
