Will I be able to do CrossFit ever again after a breast augmentation?

Question

So my surgeon said that I am never ever allowed to do pushups or pullups ever again after surgery but I see women all over the place continuing to do these exercises. My recovery has been well over a year. I want to get back to pullups and pushups. Was he just being conservative. He tells ALL his patients this-- it wasnt just me - thats his standard response to anyone. I had a breast augumentation - nothing huge- C cups with a lift and then an internal bra.

Thank you for your questions. I think that while all surgeons have different recommendations and suggestions, I think that it is unreasonable to tell patients that they can never do certain activities ever again. That is not life. And that is not realistic. Will significant muscle animation cause some increased movement and pressure on the implants? Maybe....but in the end, who cares? Do your thing and do what you want.

Well it is important to understand that this depends more on the doctor's recommendations, because not all surgical techniques are the same . I have many patients who are very athletic whether they are rigorously working out or participating in cross-fit programs who will get breast augmentations. My recommendation is to place the implants above the muscle. With a below the muscle breast augmentation, there is a risk of the implant moving laterally, towards the axilla area which is not a great aesthetic. Depending on whether your surgeon placed your implant above or below the muscle, you will be able to do all of the pushups and pull-ups you want after a few months of recovery.

I understand your concern. It is best that you consult your plastic surgeon regarding post operative care and management (i.e including massage techniques and timing) specific to your case. Your surgeon knows your condition well and has preferences on when and what to use for faster healing and recovery. Post operative care and management depends on the type of surgery performed and the technique used during surgery among other factors.It is best, however, that you follow your plastic surgeon's advice on post operative care management for a smooth and faster healing and recovery.

Most women do not need the internal bra and push ups and pull ups will put more stress on that area and may stretch and thin through the repair. However, go back and discuss this with your surgeon, or ignore his/her advice and see what happens.

Your doctor might be advising this to you because the implants might be placed under your pectoral muscles. So with these exercises that work on chest muscles may push and cause migration of the implants, especially in the first year. However, if the implants are over the muscles, then this healing time is less. Ask your doctor if the implants are over or under the muscle, so you may understand the risks better.

Typically patients are able to gradually return to their activity level after they have fully healed from breast augmentation.  This would include activities such as CrossFit.

I have my patients in light aerobics by 10 days after surgery and full activity by 6 weeks. The "negative experience of one" is prevalent in medicine where when one patient has an issue, we overreact. If your surgeon had a patient with a malposition after surgery and blamed it on exercise, he might be overreacting to that experience. The literature would point that patients do better result wise the sooner they return to activity.

Each plastic surgeon has developed  their own individual postoperative protocol based upon their formal training and years of experience. Some surgeons are conservative, some liberal. 
The concern is development of implant malposition which does occasionally occur, usually in the early postoperative period.
