March 2nd I had a tummy tuck/ breast augmentation. My stomach legs past my knees ,vagina & back are all very swollen, bruised, & extremely itchy. I'm on antibiotics, muscle relaxer,hydrocodone, blood liner which isn't helping with pain or swelling only gets worse. I was 178 going in the OR. I'm at 195 now due to swelling is this normal? I'm also in a compression garment and I'm taking a blood thinner nightly but my legs are so swollen I can't even squat down.

Hi! Swelling is normal post a mommy makeover. It's important to wear your compression garment and make sure you're not doing too much. It does take time for swelling to go down. If you have concerns please contact your surgeon.

Thank you for your question and photos. You should expect to have swelling for three to six months following mommy makeover surgery. Use of a properly fitted compression garment will help decrease the length and severity of the post-operative swelling. As the swelling decreases, the contour of your abdomen, flanks, and hips will dramatically improve. Please follow your plastic surgeons specific advice regarding your level of physical activity. Hi Melisha.Swelling and water weight gain is completely normal after mommy makeover surgery. The weight you have gained is pretty typical.Inflammation caused by the surgery makes the small vessels in your body more leaky and this then allows the fluid to get trapped in the tissues just like you have described. This swelling will begin to go away soon.Lymphatic massage, leg elevation, tight garments , Arnica cream massages, and Bromelain can help. However, you should not use Bromelain until you have discussed this with your doctor and are off the blood thinners.Best wishes, Dr. ALDO

Swelling is common after this procedure and can persist for several months.  Have your plastic surgeon check the fit of your garment to ensure that it is proper.  Also, keep your feet elevated when you can to help decrease swelling in your lower limbs.  If cleared to do so by your surgeon, some patients benefit from having a lymphatic massage.  This should be done by a massage therapist trained to perform this.

It is important to follow up with your doctor to let him evaluate you.  Swelling is very normal and is worse with some people compared to others.  Also blood thinners may make the swelling worse for various reasons.  It looks like you have some bruising along the inside of your thighs and this needs to be checked on.  Your results look good so I'm sure the bulk of your swelling will pass uneventfully.
