In my own practice I would prefer that you remain close by until the sutures were removed in there was no significant complication. This would be about 10 days. Periodic ambulation while on the flight would be absolutely necessary.
It sounds like you are getting a very larger surgery. The amount of time required to stay after surgery will depend and none of us can answer this. You should speak to your surgeon. You should expect to stay several weeks, I imagine, and more importantly, you will be required to travel back at a moments notice if there are questions, concerns, or complications. You also need to travel back for your followup appointments. Hopefully you have considered all these factors before choosing to have your surgery "a long distance" away.
This question is best answered by your surgeon as opinions may vary. Are you referring to traveling for surgery and then needing to go home? Are you traveling by car or plane? It's recommended that you stay close to your surgeon for 2-3 weeks if you are traveling for surgery. Long flights should be avoided for a few weeks. Traveling long distance for other reasons after surgery would likely be okay after six weeks depending on how you are healing.
Hello,With large scale surgery like you seem to be planning there are advantages of being close to your surgeon for follow-up. These types of procedures all take a while to mature. A few weeks would be minimum for me here but you would have to consider the possibility of having to return if there were problems even after that.Best Regards,John Di Saia MD
The recommendations for travel after surgery are similar for whatever surgery you have gone through. If you have received a general anesthesia, your blood clotting has been affected and you are more likely to sustain a blood clot in your legs for the next six weeks. This usually occurs when you sit for long periods of time, generally agreed upon to be longer than 2 hours. Therefore if you are traveling by car, train, or plane, you need to stand up and walk every hour during the travel. You should also wear a good pair of support stockings. (This applies to men and women.)I hope that this helps you.
Provided all is going perfect. Traveling long distance after surgery should be six weeks. High risk of blood clots
Thank you for the question and it is best not to have any travel plans for atleast 6 weeks after surgery as complications can occur and it is best to be closer to your surgeon.Dr. Corbin
