ARE silicone strips better than silicone gel?

Is silicone sheet will better protection area from trauma although getting them to adapt can sometimes be an issue. If the scar can be protected from trauma without the use of silicone then that's just fine.

It is best to follow up with your surgeon so your scarring can be assessed before you change your scar care regimen. Good luck!

Hello and thank-you for your question.I recommend silicone scar care products for all of our patients who undergo a mommy makeover.  Application of the product daily begins at 4-5 weeks post-op. Silicone products are available in gel form, solid stick (such as Prosil), and as strips.  All are effective in post-operative scar care.  The silicone strips have the advantage of adding a bit of pressure, and I find them more effective for treating raised (hypertrophic) scars. The strips are a bit more work as they have to be applied and kept in place. For our patients who appear to be forming raised scars, I most frequently recommend using the gel or solid stick during the day and the strips at night.Best regards,Andrew Lyos, MD, FACS

Thank you for your excellent question.  Though the silicone effects can be considered equivalent BioCorneum is nice in that it is a gel that can be tailored to the incision site easier than silicone strips.  It also contains a variety of sunscreens to afford protection from the suns UV radiation which can cause incisions to pigment improperly.  If you apply sunscreen during the day and keep your incisions covered, while using silicone sheets at night you probably would have equivalent results. With proper usage, both are good. Just make sure you don't expose the area to the sun and don't tug on the incision lines. 

Dear Rav,I believe the strips are superior to the gels.  Both will help flatten the scars (strips are more effective), but the strip has an additional benefit of acting like a tension-reliever over the scar, so they can reduce the chance of scar widening as well.
