Why does saline spray dry my nose out more post rhinoplasty?

Question

I am trying to maintain regular use of saline spray as recommended to keep my nose moist at 2 weeks post op however I feel that after using the saline spray my nose feels even more dry and stiff. I have tried different brands and not much luck. Some of the tips on the saline spray were too large for my nostril so I purchased a spray with a more narrow tip for application. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi and thank you for your question.  Doctors recommend saline nasal sprays after rhinoplasty for a couple of reasons.  Saline nasal sprays help to keep the nasal cavities moist which promotes healing, and they also help your body clear debris which may build up in the area post-surgery.  If you find your nasal spray does not keep your airway moist, you might try a brand with aloe vera as one of its key ingredients.  Alternatively, a humidifier by your bed at night or daily use of a neti pot may help resolve your dryness issue.  If none of these measures help, contact the board-certified facial plastic surgeon who performed your surgery for a follow-up and personalized advice.  I hope these suggestions help. The salt in saline spray can make the nose feel dry. One way to counteract that is to use Ayr gel which has aloe in it and will keep the nose moist. Avoid using oil based stuff like vaseline etc as that can cause pneumonia like symptoms. RegardsDr. J

Hello,
Some brands of saline spray are better than others.  I usually recommend Ayr saline spray for my patients.  It coats the nose evenly and maintains moisturization the longest.  I also recommend trying some Vaseline on a Qtip and coating the inside of the nostrils with it.  Not sure how far out of your rhinoplasty you are but the vaseline would help with dryness after the first week.
