Will breast surgery have an impact on my voice?

Question

I am a professionally trained classical singer and I've wanted to get a breast augmentation. My only concern is whether the scaring or surgery in general will have an influence on breath support, on the Diaphragm or lung capacity? I am aware of the recovery time but I am more concerned about long-term consequences? Since my career and future depends on it I have to consider all the outcomes. I would be grateful for some reliable help! Thanks

Hi Zerbinetta,There is no direct effect in any way from implants changing your voice.  However, there can be temporary hoarseness from any surgery done under general anesthesia, especially if a breathing tube is inserted down trough your voice box.  We only use tubes which end in the back of the mouth and do not go through the vocal cords.  All the best, Dr. Joe

Great question. Fortunately breast augmentation will not affect your voice. If the implant is placed under the muscle ( pectorals) then you may have soreness externally with no effect on the muscles ( diaphragm) internally. The most influence on your voice is the anesthesia as some will need to put a breathing tube through your vocal chords. Ask your surgeon to make an appointment with your anesthesia provider. As others have stated breast implants per se should not impact your voice.However it is very important that you speak with the anesthesiologist preop to emphasize the importance of your voice and vocal cords to your career.One alternative to intubation during anesthesia which requires a to be passed between your vocal cords, a better option for you might be laryngeal mask anesthesia (LMA) which does not require the placement of a tube between your vocal cords which does have a very very slight risk of injury.
