Is a tummy tuck worth it for a 3.8cm separation?

There is really no substitute for a tummy tuck when it comes to removing excess skin. Bringing the muscles together can provide a small mechanical advantage for the rectus muscles because they will be realigned. This can improve back pain and bowel function in some patients. The main reason to have a tummy tuck is cosmetic. You should not have it with the expectation that it will improve your kite surfing ability, for example.

Thank you for your query. If you have loose skin and muscle separation, you can certainly consider a tummy tuck procedure. It may take you a while, after surgery to get back to all the exercises, but you should able to do everything that you are doing now, in a few months after surgery. Most of my patients feel that they have more core strength than before, a few months after the tummy tuck.. A tummy tuck to repair your diastasis and to remove your excess skin should return you to full function after everything has had a full chance to heal after 6 to 8 weeks. The realignment of your abdominal muscles with sutures as well as removal of the excess skin should improve your abdominal contour and core strength. Once you are fully healed, there should be no reason that you can’t perform all of the activities that you wish to. Best wishes.

Thank you for posting your question here!Wether a surgery is worth it or not is solely dependent on you. From your posting it sounds like you are bothered by your excess skin and depending on where the excess skin is you might need a full abdominoplasty to address it and during that surgery your surgeon will typically do plication of the fascia to decrease that separation. You might have some limitations on what you can and cannot do initially during your healing period but once that is done you can go back to doing your exercises and activities. A lot of patients actually state that they have better core power after the surgery since the muscles are better aligned now. But again as with any aesthetic procedure the ultimate decision on wether to go for it or not is solely yours.

Just tightening your abdominal muscles will not guarantee strength and ability to do all the activities you listed. You still may have to work up to regain the ability to do everything.
