Hi, I had tummy tuck last year with permanent stitches to close my 2cm wide diastasis recti and absorbable stitches around belly button and incision line. Now according to both ultrasound and ct scan, I have two granuloma sutures (scar tissue) above my belly button. They’re hurting me if exercise. My PS said she used permanent sutures to close the muscle four stitches above and three stitches below belly button. Is it okay to remove all permanent stitches without replacing?

Answer: Removing tummy tuck sutures Yes, these sutures can be removed without losing any correction. It is been shown that there is no difference between permanent and absorbable sutures for repair of muscle looseness in abdominoplasty. The permanent sutures usually last about 6 months which gives plenty of time for the muscle repair to have fully healed. If tyour granulomas are removed, the sutures would certainly be found loose and is not serving any particular purpose.

Answer: Suture removal Theoretically yes you can remove the permanent sutures and not replace them, but it's important to understand what that would mean. The incision would need to be opened in order to access the sutures. Your abdominal repair/results could be impacted by the removal of the sutures. I encourage you to discuss your concerns with your surgeon as you may be able to address the granulomas in a less invasive way.
