What are the real odds of complications and more surgery? Worried about possible complications after breast augmentation.

The complication rate after breast augmentation is very low if the patient is a good candidate, the implant used fits that persons breast dimensions, meticulous surgical care is used, including use of a Keller Funnel for implant insertion, and proper post operative support is given. The odds of encountering different types of problems can be found on each manufacturers website. BII is a poorly understood entity and the best position papers on this can be found the the ASPS website. If you are young and have a breast augmentation, there is a high chance that you will need an additional surgery in the future as the implants are man-made devices and are not meant to last a lifetime. With any surgical procedure and a foreign body such as an implant, there is always a risk; however, the research currently shows that the chances of breast implant illness or the implants attaching to the ribs are very minimal. I recommend speaking with a board certified plastic surgeon to discuss your concerns.

After I measure and discuss goals with my patients, we then look at pictures of women (my patients) with similar measurements with different size and style breast implants, and they choose what looks right for them. They also get to see what they would look like when the breasts have fully dropped and fluffed and in clothes. It is normal to feel nervous prior to surgery but in general, breast augmentation procedure is a very safe surgery with low complications rates.
Implant size discussion and implant selection is one of the most important steps during your consultation with plastic surgeon. It is normal to be nervous about surgery. Breast augmentation is a very common procedure that is relatively low risk. Your surgeon will review your medical history to ensure that you are a good candidate for surgery and address any health concerns. BII is not very common and many who do experience symptoms of BII will report that the symptoms improve or resolve when the implants and capsules are removed. Any surgery is major surgery. Breast augmentation is no different. First of all, breast implants are not meant to last your lifetime, so it is important to know that even in cases without complications you will likely need to get the implants exchanged at some point. Each implant manufacturer has specific warranty information based on their products. Breast implant illness (BII), although not a medical diagnosis, is concerning to many patients. It is poorly characterized and consists of cluster of symptoms that don't fit into any known disease diagnosis. The actual number of patients with BII is unknown as there haven't been any studies on this yet. There seems to be an association of BII among patients with autoimmune diseases, however, anyone is potentially at risk.
