The need for revision surgery depends on a multitude of variables. Generally speaking, the outcome of breast, augmentation surgery is based on the patient’s candidacy for the procedure, the selection of implants in regards to size shape, and type, and the surgeons ability to put the implants in the correct anatomic position. Adding a breast lift to breast augmentation surgery Increases the complexity of the procedure which does cause an increased rate of complications, undesirable, side effects, and increased revision rates. Breast augmentation with a lift has a higher revision rate than other plastic surgery procedures. For most patients the number of revisions is going to be limited, but a lot depends on how the results turn out and what each patient feels is acceptable. There isn’t much patience can do regarding their own candidacy for the procedure. Implant selection is best done with your provider. Working with excessively large implants increases the chance of undesirable side effects, complications and need for revision surgery. Plastic surgeons will vary in how they approach guiding patients through implant decision Process. Some plastic surgeons are better at this than others. The one variable patients have the most control over and the single variable that is probably going to have the greatest impact on the need for revision surgery is provider selection for the first procedure. All plastic surgeon will have surgeon needs for revision surgery. Some providers do better work than others, and in the hands of the best providers the chance of needing revisions goes down substantially. Finding the best plastic surgeon is not necessarily easy or straightforward. My best suggestion is to have multiple in person, consultations with plastic surgeons in your community who seem to have a lot of experience doing , a variety of breast surgery procedures. You may want to look for plastic surgeons who are actively involved and do a lot of breast cancer reconstruction surgery since this type of surgery is fairly complex and tends to include all cosmetic aspects of the breast surgery as well, including augmentation with breast lift surgery. During each consultation, ask each provider to open up their portfolio and show you their entire collection up before, and after pictures of previous patients, who had similar body characteristics to your own. An experienced provider should have no difficulty showing you the before and after pictures of at least 50 previous patients. Being shown a handful of pre-selected images, representing only the best results of the providers career may be insufficient to get a clear understanding of what averages results look like in the hands of each provider. Ask each provider what your most common reason for doing revision surgery is, what their revision rate is, and what their revision policy is. There’s no correct number of consultations needed to find the better provider. The more consultations you have the more likely you are to find the better provider for your needs. Take care notes during each consultation, especially regarding the quantity and quality of before and after pictures. Best, Mats Hagstrom, MD
