Breast Augmentation and Hysterectomy same time?

Question

I’m scheduled for breast augmentation in April but have been an Adenomyosis/Endometriosis suffer for 3 years now. Had 8 surgeries to try reduce the pain including an ablation and tubes removed. My doctor is pushing for a hysterectomy but leave the ovaries for a few more years. I selfishly would like my boobs done first but can they both be done at same time or a week apart for same recovery time?

Hi there: There are two issues to consider: 1. Are the operations compatible? Ie will having the hysterectomy increase the risk of a breast complication or vice versa.  Theoretically if good appropriate antibiotic cover is used during the Surgery, and the surgeries are done separately with separate setups, this risk - of implant infection - should be low. Otherwise, no reason I can see that technically they can’t be done together.2. Your plastic surgeon and gynaecologist both need to work at the same hospital and be prepared to schedule a combined case.  This is a logistical issue for you to work through - talk with your Plastic surgeon.If it can be organised, it makes sense to me!All the bestHoward WebsterPlastic Surgeon

Hi Emr, I dont recommend combining the surgeries. This would increase your risks associated with the surgery including DVTs. You should allow at least 6-12 weeks of recovery between the surgeries and ensure your surgeon is happy with your recovery before having another procedure.

We recommend spacing elective surgeries that use general anesthesia at least 30 days apart. Personally, I would not combine gynecologic and cosmetic procedures under the same anesthetic.

Hello, technically it is possible to have breast augmentation and hysterectomy surgery at the same time.  You would need to discuss this with your surgeons to determine if combined surgery is appropriate for you, after taking into consideration your overall health, medical history and other factors.

Ideally, you would have both of these procedures done at the same time: one recovery, one general anesthesia, no increased risk. I have done this (as well tummy tucks, liposuction and facial procedures) numerous times.  You will need an Ob-Gyn doctor and a plastic surgeon who are both amenable to this and who both have privileges to operate at the same facility. Thank you for your question. Technically these procedures can be done during the same anesthesia setting. I recommend discussing with both surgeons to see if they can coordinate schedules. I would recommend having the augmentation done first because of sterility issues. Best of luck.

Although this is technically feasible, and I've done it on a number of occasions, the real answer depends on the specific circumstances of your medical situation, so Be sure to discuss your goals and concerns with your board certified plastic surgeon and consider the pros and the cons.
