10 weeks post tummy tuck and going on holiday

Question

its a beach holiday with my kids and long days under the sun, is this safe and how much sun block should i use on my belly bottom, the scar will be hidden under my high wasted bikini

Thanks for the question. Generally, most patients can travel within 2 to 4 weeks after Tummy Tuck surgery. However, car or airplane travel should be avoided to prevent the risk of blood clots in the legs. I wish you all the best.

Thank you for your question.I usually recommend that my patients keep their scars covered for up to 12 weeks to prevent pigmentation from the sun.  High waist bikini bottoms should be enough but it wouldn't hurt to cover your belly button with a Band-aid for added protection.  I would also recommend a visit with your surgeon so they may examine you and advise accordingly.Good luck and have fun!

Be sure to apply sunscreen to protect your scar from hyperpigmentation which causes darkening of the scars permanently. It would also be better to have a swimwear that covers the incision to minimize sun exposure.

Be sure to apply sunscreen liberally (SPF 30+) and reapply every couple of hours or after being in the water.  Even though your incisions will be covered by clothing/bathing suit use sunscreen on them.  The sun's rays can penetrate clothing.  Have fun on your trip!

At ten weeks if there has been normal healing, you should be O.K. to take sun. Yes use sunblock SPF 15 or greater. Yes, you may swell more easily in the operated areas. Yes, you may tire more easily still.Use good judgement and enjoy your vacation.

Thank you for your question! We typically recommend no tanning or sun exposure to scarring for a minimum of one full year after surgery. I would still apply sunscreen on your scar even though it is underneath your swimsuit just to be safe. Enjoy your vacation with your littles!!!
