I’ve seen some drs perform drainless tt and others that say you’d have to drain it out later with a needle anyway so may as well place the drains. Are all patients candidates for drainless tt? And if u are a candidate is that a personal choice to have it drainless or the doctors choice?
Answer: Can I have a drainless tummy tuck? In my practice 99.9% of all patients are candidates for a drainless tummy tuck. I have not been using drains for 10+ years, and, in my opinion, there is no downside and all upside. There is no higher occurrence of a seroma (fluid collection) that has to be drained. In fact, I have noticed FEWER instances in seromas since I stopped using drains. If, after explaining my technique and philosophy to a potential patient, if they still wanted a drain, I would place one, but again, I find them completely unnecessary.

CONTACT NOW Answer: Drainless tummy tuck Hello and thank you for your questions. Every tummy tuck patient is a candidate for the drainless technique. It is a different technique than the traditional tummy tuck. The difference lies in how you close the wounds. For surgeons who do not perform this technique, if they were to not place drains then you would surely develop a seroma and have to drain the fluid with syringes in the postoperative period. However, for those who perform the drainless technique, there is no need for drains, which makes your recovery a lot smoother. If you want a drainless tummy tuck and your surgeon does not know how to perform that technique then you should find a surgeon who does.

Answer: Drainless tummy tucks Most patients do very well with progressive tension sutures in lieu of drains in my practice. The patients that have subsequently developed seromas have almost all been massive weight loss patients and patients that have had either a fleur de lis or extended abdominoplasties. So while there is a risk of developing a fluid collection without drains, most patients do not have this issue.

Answer: Is everyone a candidate for drainless tummy tuck? Everyone who is a candidate for a tummy tuck is a candidate for a drainless tummy tuck. However, not every surgeon has been trained in how to perform it or don't feel comfortable performing it and continue to use drains because that has worked for them for years. Numerous studies have shown a decrease risk of fluid collections (seroma) when performing one type of drainless tummy tuck regardless of wieght. I prefer the progressive tension suture (PTS) technique for this reason. However, some surgeons will use TissueGlue in order to not use the sutures, however liposuction will increase the risk of seroma when the glue is used which is not the case with the PTS technique. Regards,

Answer: Are all patients candidates for Drainless Tummy Tucks? With few exceptions, the short answer is yes. I average 50 tummy tucks per year and cannot remember the last patient that had drains. However, if a patient has had a tummy tuck before, it might be necessary. Why is that? There could be more scar tissue from the previous surgery and this prevents the small blood vessels from constricting as they normally would. This would cause more bleeding and drains may be necessary. To perform the “Drainless Tummy Tuck” (no drain tummy tuck) requires a special suturing technique called progressive tension sutures. Some of the advantages of the drainless tummy tuck are:Faster Recovery Less DowntimeLess Post-Operative DiscomfortLower Risk of Seromas (Fluid Collection)Not encumbered with drains for 5-10 days (which patients hate)
