I am on day 3 post off and my swelling in my abdominal area is quite uncomfortable. I look around 6 months pregnant and typically I have a lean, flat stomach. I weight around 112 lbs and I am 5'8". I am not taking any of the pain meds and never have, just Tylenol extra strength, Valium twice a day, and the antibiotic. How long will this bloat last? I don't like it!
Answer: Bloating after breast augmentation, why? It is likely that you were given narcotic (opiate) medications during your anesthetic and the result can be that your GI tract slows down and you become bloated and constipated. You may need to try an enema to help relieve the constipation/distension and add a stool softener to your diet. I would avoid a laxative as this may make your discomfort worse. Sorry to hear about your bloating and good luck.

CONTACT NOW Answer: Bloating after breast augmentation Thank you for your question. This is a common side effect after surgery, especially after just a couple days. This can be caused from the anesthesia as well as medications you are taking. You can try taking an over the counter stool softener. If the bloating and pain continues or is worrisome then this is something you need to discuss with your surgeon. If you would like more information regarding breast augmentation and the recovery process you and download a free copy of my Breast Augmentation Planner at aBetterBreast.com.Best of luck to you.

Answer: Ileus You can get an ileus (temporarily "paralyzed" bowels) from anesthesia. Best to follow your doctor's advice and let them know. It will resolve, but there are some things you can do to speed things up.

Answer: Bloating We see this not uncommonly after breast augmentation. Usually, some of the opiates given to you intra-operatively as well as the pain pills postoperatively will cause your intestines to not work well. I would try some laxatives, and stool softeners and stop any pain pills. This will go away over the next few days. Stay in touch with your plastic surgeon for postoperative instructions. Best of luck.

Answer: Constipation Constipation after anesthesia is possible. A bowel regimen of stool softener such as Colace can help. Plenty of fluids will also help. Despite this, if you are still constipated, then I recommend Miralax. Best wishes, Dr. Ravi Somayazula
