Submuscular implants - Massage or not to massage? (photo)

Best to just listen to your doctor. I don't use massage and there is no data to support it. None. That said, it can help to massage the skin using moisturizer. This can prevent drying of the skin and keep it supple. It can also calm the nerves as they are "waking up" after surgery. Again, best to just listen to your doctor!

I believe that a gentle massage help the muscle to relax and the implant to drop in the right place.

Different surgeons have different aftercare practice.

Ask to your surgeon for clarification.

I do not recommend massage after breast augmentation, but some surgeons do recommend this.  Continue to follow up with your surgeon.

Plastic surgeons often do things differently from one another and postop breast massage following augmentation is in that category. Best bet is to ask your surgeon if they want you to massage your implants. If they do, they should demonstrate to you how they want you to do this, how often, how long, etc.

Every surgeon has different opinions and instructions regarding postoperative care. Personally, I ask my patients to start massage, or movement of the implants within the pocket after one week. I ask them to do it once daily. I do firmly believe that this type of massage keeps the pockets open and generous and decreases chances of capsular contracture. It seems to work for my patients. However, ask your surgeon, as there may be reasons he or she does not want you do do this. Good luck!

I have specific massage instruction that I start a week out from surgery for most of my patients...not all. I would discuss your post op care with your surgeon as they know what they did and should have a preference on what you do post op.

Thank you for your question.You are very early in your healing process. I would defer to your surgeon on when and if they feel you need to start massaging. Each surgeon has their own preference on how and when to start, but it usually not something that is started the first couple weeks after surgery. Good luck with recovery.

The swelling looks about right for being a week out from surgery.  I prefer to have patients massage when they are about this far out.  There is no harm in it and it may be helpful so that the implants sit at the proper level.  

Thank you for sharing your question and photograph and congratulations on your procedure!  Though you will find a varied amount of opinions on implant displacement exercises there has never been any data that shows that it provides any benefit or causes any increased risks.  As a general rule in my practice I do not recommend  these exercises as patients find them to be painful and because it may increase the risk of bleeding.  Hope this helps.

Thank you for your recent question ! Each surgeon has their preference on whether or not they want you to massage. I typically have my patients return to see me about three weeks post op, at which I will have them start massaging their breasts at that point. I would recommend contacting your surgeon to see his or her recommendation.  Best of luck!
