Risks of not wearing compression vest after chest Smart Lipo?

Question

I planning to have chest smartlipo next couple of weeks but I get servere pain in my chest when wearing the compression vest (Under armour brand) due tendonitis. Is it OK if I do not wear the compression vest? What are the risks of not wearing the compression vest? Will not wearing the vest cause the surgery to fail or any other permenant malformation.

Smart lipo and all other lipo techniques cause your body to produce a large amount fluid in the treated areas. Compression keeps the fluid from building up and encourages drainage through the surgical incision sites. If you do not use compression, you will a large buildup of fluid in the treated areas which will create significant swelling, discomfort, bruising and increase the risk for infection. Also, it will prolong the healing phase and create hard lumps as the tissue fluid solidifies over time. Very bad idea. Shop for compression vests which fit you well.

It is essential to wear a compression to get the best results and to limit long term irregularities.  It also gets rid of the swelling much more quickly.  With that said we customize foam vests for our patients that are fairly comfortable.  Please speak to your physician about a less irritating option.  Best, Dr. Emer.

It is imperative that you have some mode of compression following your Smartlipo procedure. If you don't you can develop seromas, skin irregularities, and persistent swelling. You may want to reconsider this procedure. Dr. Burnett

The main reason for wearing compression after the surgery  is to decrease the bleeding bruising and swelling. If you're really lucky and have little or none of the above you can get away without the compression but I wouldn't try it. The other thing that makes a lot of sense is using ice for several days.
