Painful constipation one week after TT with MR. Is this a common thing?

Had TT with MR 7 days ago. I have followed all my PS's instructions (colace 3 days before surgery) but am experiencing very painful cramps and sharp pains from constipation. By day 5, I tried smooth move tea, prunes, and even stimulant laxative. I cut way back on my Vicodin to just two per day. I'm getting scared that I have bowel obstruction or something. I was dry heaving last night from the cramps. I've always been regular before. Any advice?

Hello! This is extremely common after TT, and is often secondary to narcotic medications, so cutting down (out?) vicodin is great. I typically recommend combination of dulcolax and miralax, with fiber supplements like Senokot, for my patients. Moving around also helps, like walking, but nothing strenuous. If you have severe abdominal pain or major concerns, then you may need to see a gastroenterologist.

The main cause is the pain pills. You must completely stop the narcotics. That's the Vicodin. If you don't stop that, it will be much harder to cure the constipation. Tylenol and Motrin are good to take. They help with pain and do not cause constipation.
In my experience, milk of magnesia (MOM) almost always works! One tablespoon twice a day until a BM. I have had tremendous success with this.
You must keep your surgeon posted of your progress. If not better in a day or two, further medical help is recommended. 
Give the MOM a chance. Hope it works!

Constipation can occur after surgery. Often stopping the pain meds is critical. You should absolutely review this with your doctor. He may have preferences as to what to take to help you.

Constipation is caused by a combination of the anesthesia and pain medication. I'm sorry that, despite taking all the right steps, you are suffering from this.  No pun intended, but it will pass.
