It seems that the best practices for recovery after implants have been changing. This is my 5th surgery (gel implants placed wrapped with gala flex) and doc and nurse now say - no massage. Do you still recommend massage after augmentation plus compression band or is this no longer necessary?
Answer: No massage Massage was once advised with earlier generation implants to prevent capsular contracture. There is no evidence to support this with current implants and it may even be harmful as it may prevent ingroeth of your tissues into the shell of the implant and/or the mesh. I use a bra with light upper pole compression strapping to stabilise the implants for a week and then a simple supportive bra. No further compression is usually necessary. Just follow your surgeon's instructions and I'm sure you will be fine

Answer: Everybody's different The gold standard of patient care after plastic surgery is to tailor the patient experience to the individual. It goes without saying that a blanket approach for any aspect of breast surgery is not going to be optimal for every patient. Some patients are going to need massage due to their anatomy and how we see their breasts progressing during recovery. Other patients may need to avoid massage as settling may be on track and the patient may be at higher risk of the implant dropping too low or bottoming-out. There is no one-size-fits-all answer and you should always listen to the advice of your plastic surgeon as this is tailored to you, your surgical history, your goals, and your anatomy.

Answer: Post op recommendations Each surgeon will have her/his own protocol regarding massage and compression. My patients wear a surgical support bra after surgery to help with swelling and healing tissues. Your situation may be influenced by the galaflex and the number of breast surgeries you've had. I encourage you to discuss your concerns and your surgeon's rationale for post op care with your surgeon. It is important you feel comfortable and confident in your recovery.

Answer: Compression and massage still recommended post breast aug? Hello @JupitaMoon06 thank you for your question. Every practice works differently and is fine. What I do for my patients. It is very important to take care of the skin, to keep it hydrated, to keep the tapes fixed, to keep an external compression An obvious compressive bra is essential to reduce the tension on the scar and also to maintain the skin in the proper healing process. Drains and control of daily spending, all my patients without exception, because it's allows me is: 1. Decrease the amount of inflammatory fluid or blood that has accumulated in the area 2. allows me to quantify how much is coming out of that drain, we call it how much is spending. Post-operative therapiesThe postoperative period is fundamental between 5 to 10 therapies in order to diminish the inflammatory process, to mobilize the liquids in a better way since the lymphatic drainage is altered and so that we can control and stimulate the healing process. That is important part of the recuperation process for my patients, for me is necessary post treatment sessions. I hope this shed some light! Alan Gonzalez MD FACS
