I am a 28 yo woman and hate my prominent Adams Apple. I am trying to locate a surgeon in Chicago or near that does it on women.

is going to be essentially the same on a woman as a man, and it is always a
good idea to choose a surgeon who is experienced. I would not hesitate to
choose a surgeon who does the procedure for transsexuals. The cost varies

Everyone is born with a thyroid cartilage, the underlying structure that causes the appearance of an adam's apple.  Testosterone tends to make that cartilage more prominent leading to a more obvious adam's apple in men and some transgender women.  Many women with thin necks will also have a very visible thyroid cartilage, you will be able to see the structure in many female models.  The procedure to reduce this appearance is the same in everyone, no matter your assigned gender.  You will want to see a surgeon with significant experience, and so they will certainly be performing this surgery on transgender women as well as cisgender women (like you).  Dr. Loren Schechter is well know in the field and is certainly the most experienced at this in the Chicago area.  There are several others in the country that you can locate with a little research.  Good luck. Bryan Rolfes, MD

Hi,Don't be too embarrassed! Tracheal shave will help create a more feminine neck. While women typically don't require it and it is more common in the transgender population, it can still be performed in a similar manner for a female. Just be sure to find a surgeon experienced in that procedure. One place to look in regards to a surgeon in your area is on transgender message boards. Although it is less likely to be needed in women, I definitely get quite a few female patients who request a tracheal shave. The main thing when looking for a surgeon is to ensure they use a technique that spares the vocal cords since they can be damaged. I use a camera to look directly at the vocal cords during the procedure. I don't know of anyone specifically in Chicago who uses this technique, but it is worth traveling to go to an experienced surgeon. Many surgeons now have video consults which would allow you to only travel for the procedure itself.

I cannot give you a name, but I can reassure you that if a plastic surgeon is doing the operation on genetic males, they can certainly do it in genetic females. Contact a board certified plastic surgeon in your area who does transgenders.

Thank you for your question.  This procedure is done in the same way regardless of the gender.  I myself have performed this procedure on genetic women as well as transgender females.  You will want to find an experience surgeon that is board certified.  If you can not locate one near you, I would be more than happy to see you in my Englewood, CO office.  Our office very accommodating with out of town patients.  

Tracheal shaves can be done in any person, male or female, with an undesired prominent adam's apple prominence. Contrary to popular perception, I have performed it as often for non-transgender patients as transgender patients. Depending on the amount of thyroid cartilage that needs to be removed and the distance from the chin to the thyroid prominence, it can be done through either a small incision directly over it or from a submental incision under the chin.

This is not a procedure that is specific for men or women ot transgenders but instead for anyone who does not like the appearance of their thyroid cartilage aka "adam's apple"   It is a very simple thirty minute procedure where an incision is made over the thyroid cartilage and some of the cartilage safely removed without injuring the underlying vocal cord attachments.  There is a limit to the amount removed and the muscles must be preserved for adequate camouflage.
