Does this bruise look like a hematoma? Do my nipples seem inverted or simply adjusting? Surgery was 5 days ago. (Photo)

Please see your surgeon to make sure your recovery is going well. The bruising may not be an indication of hematoma however it’s better to discuss with your surgeon directly.

Hello!This just looks like normal bruising, not a hematoma. Typically hematoma affects only one side, not both, and presents asymmetrically with one breast bigger than the other. Arnica montana is an herbal supplement that assists in resolving bruising. So does Bromelain which is naturally found in Pineapple!You should contact your surgeon if you have concerns. An accurate physical examination is the best and most appropriate way to determine the exact nature of the skin discoloration.However based on the position, colour, lack of significant swelling or asymmetry of the breast (and the fact that you did not mention any pain or discomfort on the right side), it is more likely that this is just a bruise rather than an hematoma. I normally reassess my patient between six and eight days after surgery and I guess there probably your surgeon will reassess you in the next few days.Make sure that you mention all your concerns as he will be the best person to address them.All the best and I wish you as safe recovery.Andrea Marando MDCertified, European Board of Plastic Surgery  Member, Am. you look to be healing appropriately for this stage and the bruising looks to be within normal limits. You are early postop and things will change a lot over the coming months. 

While all of these symptoms are somewhat normal post-operatively, it is very important that you keep in direct contact with your Surgeon and/or his Nurse. You do not appear to have a Hematoma, rather some superficial bruising that should improve daily. Ask your Surgeon if a topical Arnica gel or cream can help with this as well as increasing your intake of pineapple, as it is found to carry similar nutrients that improve bruising. Again, keep your regular appointments with your Surgeon so that your concerns can be addressed directly. Best wishes!

Hello,this does not appear to be a hematoma but instead superficial bruising and collection of blood subcutaneously. However, examination by your surgeon is the best way to determine this. As for the nipples, this is not an unusual finding and usually resolves. 

Inversion of your nipples may be related to swelling.  It is too early to tell. If you have repeated high temps you should discuss this with your surgeon.

Thank you for your question. Nothing replaces an inperson examination, but from your photos and description you are likely just bruised. As far as your nipples, they can be somewhat inverted and swollen after surgery - you are very swollen and the tissues just need time. Months even. Continue to monitor and if things change (if you have worsening pain, or a persistent fever), then you should follow-up sooner rather than later with your Plastic Surgeon. Best of luck!
