Can implants (right has contracture) be removed while lactating?

Question

Hello, My right breast currently has a contracture. It is causing really bad pain. I am currently pregnant and wish to breastfeed, if at all possible. Is there any surgeon who will remove the implants while I am still lactating? My hope is to remove both so that I can breastfeed and alleviate the pain in the right breast.

Hello @sportsmama101 thank you for your question. Even if you have a contracture waiting is best because the breasts change during pregnancy and breastfeeding as the body goes through a hormonal change that causes changes to its glandular tissue. Predicting the changes that will occur to the breasts after pregnancy is impossible that's why breast surgery after breastfeeding should be delayed for at least six months after lactation. it is hard to tell for sure without an examination. Generally speaking, it is possible to remove implants under local anesthesia. If you are considering surgery, I would suggest you consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination, you will get more information and recommendations.

Thank you for your question. In general and if this is truly bothersome to you and you have to have it taken off while you’re pregnant, local anesthesia is an option which is safe while pregnant. It is best to have a virtual consultation to discuss pros and cons.

Typically you will want to wait until you have had your baby and are finished breastfeeding before considering implant removal.  If you have saline implants you can have your implants deflated in the office which may give you some relief until you can have them surgically removed.

No one will remove your implants while you are pregnant. If you have saline implants, they can be deflated with a needle. If you are breast feeding, you will need to pump and dump around the time of surgery to remove the implants and capsules. Otherwise, you will need to wait until your breasts have settled down after breast feeding, which is usually about 6 months.
