BioCorneum can help improve the appearance of scars, but its effectiveness is best in the early stages of healing, so results may vary depending on the age and type of the scar. While BioCorneum is most effective when used during the early stages of scar healing (within the first 2-6 weeks after surgery or injury), it can still be beneficial for older scars, especially those that are raised, red, or thickened. The silicone in BioCorneum helps to soften and flatten scars, and may also improve their color and texture over time. For older scars (e.g., several months or years old), BioCorneum may not be as effective as it is for new scars, but it can still help minimally. If the scar is flat or depressed, BioCorneum may have limited impact, and other treatments like scar revision, laser therapy or microneedling might be recommended for further improvement.Krishna Vyas, MD, PhD, MHSHarvard, Hopkins, & Mayo Clinic Trained Aesthetic Plastic SurgeonNew York, New York
Our office likes Biocorneum for surgical scars. Many of our patients have told us that they have used it on older scars and stretch marks, and have seen improvement. My wife used it to test put on her 12 year old Achilles rupture surgery scar without laser treatment and it has softened the appearance and helped with thickness. The scar will always be there but the fact that it looks better after this long is a good indication that this product works. Patients like it on their surgery scars because of its easy application and it not being greasy.
While chronic scars are often best treated with other modalities, (revision, laser, etc.) for scars that are raised and/or red, old scars may improve with topical scar therapies like Biocorneum. Best wishes.
Biocorneum is a medical grade topical silicone that is useful for healing incisions to create a softer, smoother scar line. Usually, it is most efficacious at the 2-6 week period after surgery. However, it can be useful for up to 6 months - 1 year. After that, I would recommend other modalities to help improve scarring. This could be microneedling, dermabrasion, tattooing, or even re-excision and closure. Hope this helps!
Biocorneum is a great choice initially after injury/surgery to help flatted and depigment colored scars, for 6-8 weeks after the injury. Over time however, it is less efficacious and scar revision, dermabrasion, and laser treatment options can also be employed to improve scar appearance.
If the scar is thickened or red, Biocorneum (or other silicon scar products) can still be helpful. It should be massaged into the scar twice a day for 6-12 weeks. If the scar is flat and white or depressed, it will likely not help. In that case a fractionated laser could be helpful with texture.
Biocorneum helps scars heal optimally,I recommend it to all my patients 2wks after surgery, 2xdaily for 12 weeks.I find you can start it at 3mo with benefits.Best. Dr Brecht
