While it is possible to lose nipple sensation after augmentation, it is very uncommon. It is more likely to occur if the implants are placed through an incision around the nipple. Have a discussion with her plastic surgeon about his or her personal incidence of numbness, how often it happens, etc.Best of luck!Dr. SubbioBoard-Certified Plastic SurgeonNewtown Square/Philadelphia, PA
Maintaining your sensation after breast augmentation is an important aspect of careful breast augmentation surgical technique. I recommend an in-office examination as well as a detailed discussion with a surgeon who you are comfortable with and who is a Double-Board Certified Plastic Surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.Best wishes!Dr. Desai
Permanent numbness is unusual after breast augmentation, but this is one of the risks of the procedure.
Breast augmentation is often performed to increase the size of the breast for aesthetic reasons. The size, shape, and position of these implants are often based on the patient’s anatomy, the type and size of the implant, and the patient's goals. In an otherwise healthy patient, permanent changes in sensation after a breast augmentation are unusual. For more information see the link below.A detailed examination will help delineate the best surgical option. Consultation with a surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery would be the next best step.
Hello and thank you for your question. It is very unusual to have sensation loss after breast augmentation. Thebest advice you can receive is from an in-person consultation. The size, profile, and shape of the implant is based on your desired breastsize/shape, your chest wall measurements, and soft tissue quality. This decision should be based on a detailed discussion withequal input from both you and your surgeon. Make sure youspecifically look at before and after pictures of real patients who havehad this surgery performed by your surgeon and evaluate theirresults. The most important aspect is to find a surgeon you arecomfortable with. I recommend that you seek consultation with a qualifiedboard-certified plastic surgeon who can evaluate you in person.Best wishes and good luck.Richard G. Reish, M.D.Harvard-trained plastic surgeon
Loss of breast sensation after breast implants occurs, but is not very common. The most quoted rate is 1% of nipple sensation can be lost, but interestingly there appears to be a correlation between implant size and increased loss of sensation. Bigger implants increasing the risks of loss of nipple sensation. Thanks for this question and best wishes, Dr. ALDO :)
Hello and thank you for your question. While a decrease in nipple sensitivity is a potential risk after a breast augmentation, it is highly uncommon.
Most patients have normal sensation after breast augmentation. Some patients do have decreased sensation, but the percent is very low.
Thanks for the question. It is very rare to lose sensation following a breast augmentation. While the sensation may be reduced during the first few weeks, it almost always returns to normal. There are also instances where the sensation increases ( this might be because the breast has more projection and the nipple rubs on one's shirt). The tactile sensation of sucking and sqeezing the breasts with implants is almost identical to those without implants according to my patients.Good luck with your future surgery.Dr. T
Thank you for the question. Generally speaking, there is a low percentage rate of patients (less than 5%) who lose sensation after breast augmentation surgery. Some patients report numbness for a few months and then their sensation returns. Sometimes loss of sensation is permanent. Results may vary from patient to patient depending on the severity and complexity of your case (the larger the implant and/or the more involved the procedure the greater the risk). There is also a risk of hyper-sensitivity (usually temporary).I hope this helps.
If you have a small frame with large breasts, whether naturally large or due to breast implants, it is possible that this is the cause of your neck, shoulder and upper back pain. Depending on the severity of the pain, you may wish to consider downsizing your breast implants to reduce the weight...
The risks of losing routine breast sensation during breast surgery are usually very small. In expert hands which would perform the procedure with gentle handling of the breast tissue, loss of sensation incidence is about 1%. The incidence increases with larger implants as this can...
