Question

On day 12 of the surgery.I gently removed the the scabs from my transplanted area with fingertips.now after doing that I am Worried about any possible damage that may have caused to the roots by this act or it may affect hair growth adversely. I am Worried because while searching this issue I get confusing results. No blood or pain felt while removing scab, but the scab contains tiny hairs embedded in scab with no root or whitish ends. at first 10 days all scabs need to be removed. No need to be worry about this act that you ve made. Thats is absolutely normal.

It is best to ask your surgeon about post operative care as each doctor has their unique regimen. "Searching" for answers on the Internet will likely lead to further confusion.  Just contact your doctor.

It is very important in the post operative period to avoid "picking" at the recipient area.  I personally like to give my patients a spray bottle to start softening up the hair crusts as soon as possible.  That along with detailed post operative instructions decreases the amount of crusting that can be generated and by 7 days there usually is no crusting to be found. I strongly suggest you discuss any further post operative care with your doc.  Best of luck.

As long as you're gently removing the scabs and there's no sign of trauma to the grafts, such as bleeding, you should be fine. 12 days is a little late to remove them, as most patients lose all their scabs in about a week, so your grafts are particularly safe since they've had so much longer to become established.

I recommend patients begin massaging the grafts gently with fingertips as early as day 5.  It is normal to see the small hairs fall out with the scabs.  At this point all the grafts are secure.

Hair shaft and scabs mostly fall down together and there is nothing to worry unless there is bleeding. The grafts are secure by now . Dont be afraid to massage the recipient  are during the washing.

Within 3 days of surgery, you can resume full activities, heavy exercises if you wish. The recipient area requires daily washes as well to keep the recipient area free of

crusts. I generally recomme and if you washed it properly, there will be no crusts on it, even the very next day. Use of a sponge which we supply our patients, a surgical sponge to fill with soapy water and press on the recipient area daily. By repeating this daily, all crusts can be washed off without any fear of losing grafts. IF any crust are present, use a Q tip and dip it into soapy water, and roll it on the crusts and that will lift them off without dislodging them, but never rub them, just roll the Q tip on the recipient crust. I like to see no evidence of any crusting in the recipient area and the crusts from the donor area gone in 7-10 days with daily washing.
