Can liposuction remove man boobs?

Unfortunately liposuction will only remove fat and not breast tissue which needs to be removed surgically. Most patients say that the pain after surgery is minimal, as far as recovery I want my patients to wait 4 to 6 weeks before resuming any type of formal exercise. Liposuction is a great tool for treating male chest fat or "man boobs" if the excess tissue is mainly fat.  Liposuction will not work well to remove glandular breast tissue however.  Glandular tissue normally needs to be removed through direct excision techniques. If you are a candidate for liposuction you will find the operation itself is fairly easy (it is quick and takes less than an hour usually, only need sedation and local anesthesia, not general) with a quick recovery.  I have my patients wear a chest compression vest for several weeks that fits easily under any clothing.  This is to restrict the amount of swelling and to encourage your skin to shrink so as to get to your final result as soon as possible.  There generally is minimal bruising which will go away over a week or maybe two.  There is also minimal pain, just a tenderness to touch for a while.  I allow my patients to exercise and do full activities in less than a week.  I hope this information helps.Thomas Taylor, MD, FACS

thank you for your question. The type of procedure depends on the cause of breast enlargement. If there is excessive breast tissue then a liposuction is a good option. However, if the gland is enlarged, then it need to be removed surgically. You can expect some swelling and bruising after the surgery.

Thanks for your question. The answer is....it depends. When considering man boobs or gynecomastia, I look at the skin excess, amount of fat, and the presence of glandular tissue. All these things will determine what your final contour or shape will be. If the enlargement is due to fat alone, or pseudogynecomastia, then liposuction may achieve the contour you desire. However, if there is significant glandular tissue present, then liposuction alone will not be sufficient. While everyone is different, most men can achieve comfort with oral pain medication alone after surgery. The recovery period is also variable. I usually limit physical exertion for at least 4-6 weeks. However, most men are able to return back to work within a week. Bruising and swelling will occur but usually resolves by the end of the first week. I recommend wearing a compression garment continuously. The garment will cover up any evidence of bruising and swelling.

Thank you for sharing your excellent question.  If your enlargement is due only to fatty tissue this can be treated with liposuction alone to afford a smaller, smoother, and flatter contour to your chest.  If however you have glandular development a combination of direct glandular excision and liposuction is often needed to obtain the best overall result.  If you only pursue liposuction pain is typically well tolerated at a 2-3/10 in severity that lasts for a few weeks.  Bruising is typically minimal.  Hope this helps.

Generally speaking, liposuction surgery alone is useful to treat lipomastia (an enlarged chest secondary to adipose tissue); rarely does it suffices as the only modality of treatment when it comes to treating true gynecomastia. ***Most patients with gynecomastia benefit from direct excision of glandular tissue plus/minus peripheral liposuction surgery.

Usually there is a combination of breast tissue that must be excised(cut out) under the areola in additon to liposuction to taper the chest into a smooth, natural contour. My patients do not describe much pain from this procedure and may use pain medications during just the first few days, using it only at night after that. There should be minimal bruising and it resolves in about a week to 10 days. You would be wise to see a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon who can show you lots of pictures of the many patients they have done so you can know what to expect. Men that have some excess fat in the area of their breasts ("man Boobs") are excellent candidates for liposuction, and can have excellent results from the procedure, and is the usual procedure done for Man boobs.

Your question is excellent and really common among gynecomastia patients.  During a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon, you will have an assessment of your appearance, skin-fat-fibrous tissue characteristics, and discussion of typical recovery steps.  You'll also learn expected outcome and possible risks.  If only liposuction is needed, meaning you have little fibrous tissue, then tiny incisions are used, fat is removed and a compression vest helps swelling.  Patients typically have patchy bruise discoloration which fades in 2-3 weeks.  Patients typically need prescription pain meds for 2-5 days, decreasing the dosages over that time.  These men usually return to office type work in less than one week, but we recommend waiting 3 weeks for restarting exercise.  Your chosen surgeon can give you specific information pertinent to your own situation.
