I know under the muscle implants require longer healing time. But it seems over the muscle (subfascial)would be less invasive with quicker healing, hence earlier return to CrossFit. Please advise! Thanks.
Answer: Subfascial Breast Augmentation: Shorter Recovery and Less Breast Animation Issues A subfascial breast augmentation will have a shorter recovery than a subpectoral breast augmentation. In this procedure the implant is place over the muscle which does help with a smoother recovery as it pertains to return to chest exercises such as in an active cross fit individual.I usually allow a return to cardio activities after 2 weeks to help decrease any risk of bleeding around the implant. This would hold true to this procedure, but the return to heavy lifting will be right at 2 weeks as well. The upside to a subglandular breast implant is a shorter recovery and no animation deformity with pectoral flexing. The downside is less tissue coverage, especially in the upper pole of the breast, increased palpability of the implant with a higher risk of scarring, and possibly decreased mammographic screening accuracy.I have published and presented an article on this plane to help correct animation deformities in breast augmentation patients and in most patients is an option.

Answer: Recovery period Thanks fro the question. Every surgeon will have his/her own post op protocol, so best to go along with what your surgeon says. That being said, I will let my patients resume full activity as tolerated at 4-6 weeks post op. Best regards.

Answer: Timing for intense work-out after breast augmentation Post-operative guideline/recommendation varies among plastic surgeons. If you undergo sub glandular or subfascial breast augmentation, your pain may be less than sub-muscular augmentation. However, it does not mean that you should resume your intense workout soon afterwards. I would ask my patients to wait 4-6 weeks. Please make sure that you get the clearance from your plastic surgeon prior to resuming your exercise. Best wishes!

Answer: Breast Augmentation for body builders / Fitness Models I would only perform a sub-muscular breast augmentation surgery on someone who is interested in intense workouts. If the inferior origin of the pectorals major muscle is released appropriately there should be no problem with implant animation from muscle contraction. You must find a plastic surgeon with expertise performing this procedure as it requires a great deal of experience and surgical finesse. There may not be a significant difference in your healing time with sub-fascial vs sub pectoral placement of the implant. I perform a lot of breast augmentation on fitness models and body builders. They are looking for a natural result that lasts. On my website I have a gallery of before and after images devoted to fitness models and body builders who desire a natural looking result from breast implant surgery.

Answer: High-intensity workouts High-intensity workouts are obviously very demanding. I advise my patients to refrain from strenuous exercise for 4 to 6 weeks after breast augmentation surgery to minimize untoward complications and implant displacement. Good luck. Dr. Burnett
