Breast implants and Crohn's disease?

There is no specific contraindication for you to have a breast augmentation. Sometimes the medications that patient's with autoimmune disease take slow down the healing process. This may need to be addressed but typically they would not concern me for a straight forward augmentation. Certainly you need to discuss this with your surgeon (who should be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery) and your GI physician prior to proceeding. 

Hello, having Crohns disease is not necessarily a contraindication to having breast implant surgery but I would recommend discussing the issue with your PS, family physician and GI specialist to see if there are any specific concerns in your case.

Thanks for your question.  There shouldn't be a problem with Crohn's disease that is in remission and a breast augmentation.  Crohn's disease should not impact healing of the skin of the breast.  The issues with Crohn's disease involve the intestinal tract.  The best thing to do is to consult with a plastic surgeon who is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.  Best of luck.

If you are disease free and on no meds there is unlikely to be any contraindication for surgery. Best to discuss your concerns with your PS during a consultation. Currently there is no evidence to suggest that a BBA will lead to any flare ups.

If you IBD (Crohn's) is well controlled, you could be a good candidate for breast surgery.  However, you want to make sure you are not on any immunosuppressive medications for your Crohns.  Please talk to your GI specialist.

Given that the Chrohn's disease is well-controlled, elective breast surgery is not necessarily contraindicated.  I would suggest that you communicate your goals with your gastrointestinal physician who knows you best. He/she, will be able to evaluate your “risk profile” much better than online consultants will be able to do. Then, your gastrointestinal physician will be able to communicate with your chosen plastic surgeon in regards to optimal timing of the breast augmentation surgery; perioperative management of specific medications may also be part of this communication. Thank you for your question, and I'm sure there are many women in a similar situation as you. Generally, as long as your Chron's disease is under good control w/ no recent flare ups, there is no definitive reason that you could not have augmentation surgery. The issues would be going over your medication list, as these may effect your wound healing ability. I would get the "blessing" of your GI physician first. Best wishes.

You are correct. There is limited data available on IBD and BA. As you know, IBD, and especially Crohn's, is very different in each patient. Variable severity and symptomatolgy. The best physician to help guide you would be your IBD in consultation with your PS. I have certainly done BA in patients with IBD and the results both short and long term have been wonderful. There is no data that I am aware of that indicates a problem with patients with Crohn's having a breast augmentation. You cannot reject implants. There are problems with patients on medications to treat Crohns.

In most cases a breast augmentation shouldn't affect your Crohn's disease and vice versa.  However, I would suggest you check first with your GI doctor and make certain they don't have any concerns.  Best wishes, Dr Lepore.
