Hi! I absolutely hate my side profile and would love increase the length of my chin as well as be able to see my jawline a bit better. Would a chin implant or genioplasty work best for me and can you explain why please?

Answer: Would a chin implant or genioplasty work best for me A sliding genioplasty is performed by an oral surgeon under general anesthesia in a hospital setting with an overnight stay, and it's much more invasive than a chin implant. It is usually performed when the teeth are significantly out of alignment. Placement of a chin implant can be performed under local anesthesia as an outpatient procedure which takes approximately 30 minutes, and just augments the chin forward for cosmetic purposes. Liposuction can remove the fat deposits in your neck which will help with your jawline underneath your mandible

Answer: Being born with a weak chin You are an excellent candidate for a sliding genioplasty or implant augmentation. it seems like oral surgeons have a slight preference for doing the genioplasty while plastic surgeons tend to recommend implants. Both operations have advantages and disadvantages. A sliding genioplasty has quite a bit of mobility and that the doctor can slide the segment forward or forward and down giving both vertical and horizontal augmentation. To some degree this is true for implants as well depending where they are placed. in the end choosing someone who has sufficient skills and experience is probably more important. I suggest you have multiple consultations with doctors from both specialties and see what you think firsthand. To be a good advocate for yourself you should ask each provider to show their entire collection of before and after pictures. Being shown a handful of sample pictures which were preselected and most likely represent the best results of the providers career is insufficient to get a clear understanding of an average results look like. you should ask to see excellent outcomes, average outcomes and less than outcomes. If possible you should also ask providers to show as many pictures as possible of patients with similar facial characteristics to your own. The goal here is to get clear confirmation of what your results are more likely to look like as well as the consistency of the providers work and how much experience they actually have. An experienced provider should have no difficulty showing you at least 50 sets of before and after pictures of commonly performed procedures. Both oral surgeons and plastic surgeons are competent in doing both procedures and you’ll find some plastic surgeons do sliding genioplasty‘s and some oral surgeons may prefer implants as well. What I said above is just what I have observed personally. Continue having consultations until you feel really comfortable that you found the right provider. I think it behooves patience to be very selective when it comes to cosmetic surgery and to do that correctly requires interviewing quite a few providers. Far too many people sign up with the first doctor they consult with. That significantly limits your options when it comes to choosing a quality provider. It’s not possible to choose the best provider by sitting at home on your computer. In regards to choosing the procedure you’ll have to hear first hand from each provider what they recommend. In the end I suggest you simply go with the provider you think and do the best job and let them deal with their work. Best, Mats Hagstrom MD
