Breast lift 13 days after egg retrieval - will swelling and bloating cause issues?

I am planning on completing an egg retrieval and a breast lift 13 days later. I’m concerned about the swelling and breast tenderness that I will get with the hormones from the egg retrieval. Is it advised to have a breast lift before my next period starts while I am still bloated?

Your instinct is right to question the timing. Thirteen days after retrieval you may still have elevated oestrogen, breast tenderness and fluid retention, and there is also a period of increased clotting risk after stimulation that matters for any operation under general anaesthesia. Swollen, engorged breasts make it harder to judge nipple position and symmetry accurately during a lift, which is the part of the operation that decides your result. Waiting until after your next period, ideally four to six weeks from retrieval, is usually the safer and more accurate choice, and your fertility team should be asked to confirm you are clear.

I would be cautious about having a breast lift only 13 days after egg retrieval, especially if you are still bloated, hormonally stimulated, or having breast tenderness.
The hormones used for egg retrieval can temporarily increase breast swelling, fluid retention, tenderness, and general bloating. That can make surgical markings less accurate and may make the breast size/skin envelope different from your normal baseline.
There is also a safety consideration. Ovarian stimulation and the post-retrieval period can sometimes increase inflammation, discomfort, and in some patients the risk of clotting or ovarian hyperstimulation. Adding elective surgery too close to that period may not be ideal.
It is usually better to have breast lift planning done when your body has returned closer to baseline, your next period has occurred, bloating has settled, and your fertility doctor has cleared you. For many patients, waiting at least one full cycle is more practical, but the exact timing should be individualized.
My advice would be to coordinate directly between your fertility specialist and plastic surgeon. If you are still swollen or tender before surgery, postponing is safer and may give a more predictable breast lift result.

Ovarian stimulation can temporarily cause bloating, fluid retention, and breast tenderness because of the significant hormonal changes involved. The ovaries can also remain enlarged for a period after retrieval.

The breast changes are particularly relevant for a breast lift because the surgeon is working with the breast tissue and skin at a specific point in time. A breast lift itself normally causes swelling and tenderness during the early recovery period, so having significant pre-existing breast tenderness or hormonal swelling could make the postoperative period less comfortable and potentially make the breast appearance less predictable initially.

I would not recommend choosing the timing based solely on whether you have had your period yet. Instead, I would have your plastic surgeon coordinate with your fertility specialist and confirm that you have recovered appropriately from the egg retrieval, that you are not experiencing significant bloating or symptoms suggestive of ovarian hyperstimulation, and that there are no fertility-treatment medications or complications that would affect your surgery.

If you are still noticeably bloated or your breasts remain significantly tender 13 days after retrieval, it would be worth asking whether postponing the lift until you are back closer to your normal baseline would be safer and more comfortable.

Since this is elective surgery, there is usually little benefit to rushing the date if your body has not yet settled after the fertility treatment. Your two treating physicians can give you the safest answer based on your specific stimulation protocol and recovery.

It's generally preferred to operate in the first half of the natural cycle, but in your case, the dominant factor is the elevated hormone levels from the retrieval, not your normal cycle.
Beyond the aesthetic aspect, 13 days is a very short window between the two procedures. My recommendation is to wait at least 3 months after egg retrieval before undergoing a breast lift. This time allows your hormone levels to fully stabilize, the swelling and inflammation of the breast tissue to completely subside, and your body to recover physically and hormonally from ovarian stimulation. Operating within this timeframe provides a more precise and predictable result, as well as reducing unnecessary risks of scarring and bleeding associated with still-elevated hormone levels.
