Liposuction performed after knee arthroscopiy?

Question

I'm going to have knee surgery, and will be off work for up to 12 weeks, can I have my surgery during or close in time frame of each other?

I would wait to have an elective procedure like liposuction until you are healed from the joint surgery . You also put the joint at more risk for infection and potential blood clots.  Best, Dr. Emer.

Liposuction shouldn't preclude a patient from having an arthroscopy or vice versa generally.  However, it is important to speak to both doctors about their recommendations for the timing of the procedures and any increased risks.

I frequently perform liposuction around the knees in conjunction with other procedures.  As long as your orthopedic surgeon is okay with it, you should be fine.

Thank you for your question. I would not have your liposuction done at the same time as your knee scope. There would be a higher risk for blood clots as you would be under anesthesia for longer due to the position changes that would be required. I would check with your orthopedic surgeon and see when they feel like you undergo another surgery. The recovery from liposuction is not too extensive, you could possibly do it toward the end of your recovery from knee surgery. Best of luck

You would first need to discuss that with your orthopedic surgeon, and then discuss it with your plastic surgeon. It will also depend upon how many areas you wanted treated and the amount of fat to be removed. If you want liposuction around your knees, it would not be advisable due to swelling.

If the area you were having treated with liposuction did not include the knee then there should be no issue at all.If you are having a liposuction in the general area where the orthopedic surgeon will make their incisions then there could be a potential concern from the orthopedic surgeon if done within the first few weeks.In the end it will be a decision that your orthopedic surgeon and plastic surgeon will need to make so they are the appropriate people to ask.Best,Mats Hagstrom M.D.

I would recommend against doing liposuction coincident with arthroscopy. You will likely, however, be suitable for liposuction once you have returned to normal ambulation and your orthopedic surgeon approves your next surgery. Good luck!
