Hello, I had a full tummy tuck w/o lipo on June 25th 2014. All I had was loose skin from 3 kids, only 131lbs at 5'3 1/2 so no lipo needed. I haven't had one set back I'm 33 and healthy. My scar looked the same way it does now at 8 wks as I am a quick healer. I want to know please from the looks of everything or when is one able to get a tattoo to cover the scar? I've been healing so well after my doc removed my drains at 4 wks post op, no follow up was set until mid Oct. Photos attached
Answer: To Tatoo or not Abdominoplasty (and breast lift) incisions heal in about 18 months in most cases. In patients with a red hue, they take even longer. Your incision is healing normally. Use compression to aid flattening of the incision and hydoquinone to hasten lightening. Don't try to rush it. You may tattoo later but no need to rush it. Give yourself a chance to heal first.

Answer: Tummy Tuck Thanks for the question. Actually this decision is entirely up to you. 4-6 months is enough time to get a tattoo. Then, if you talk to your surgeon and get approval, there is no obstacle to having a tattoo. I wish you all the best.

Answer: Would you recommend a tattoo to cover my tummy tuck scar? Congratulations on having undergone the tummy tuck procedure. Your plastic surgeon will be your best guide when it comes to your plan to tattoo over the scar. In my practice, I ask to wait until they are at least 12 months out of surgery. You will find an example of such a tattoo ( one of our patients) on the attached link. Best wishes.

Answer: Tattoo for scar I would suggest you wait a few months more before getting a tattoo. Scars can take about a year to mature, and it's best to wait to see how it develops before you add a tattoo over it.

Answer: Would you recommend a tatto to cover my tummy tuck scar? Hello! Thank you for the question! It is common for scars to fully mature for up to a year. In the meantime, there are a few things that may help to ameliorate your incision/scar. The most proven (as well as cheapest) modality is simple scar massage. Applying pressure and massaging the well-healed scar has been shown to improve the appearance as it breaks up the scar tissue, hopefully producing the finest scar as possible. Other things that have been shown to add some benefit, albeit controversial, are silicone sheets, hydration, and topical steroids. These can usually be started at approximately 3-4 weeks postop and when incisions healed. In addition, avoidance of direct sunlight to the incision will significantly help the appearance as they tend to discolor with UV light during the healing process. Scars will never disappear, but attempt is made to make the finest scar in a concealed location. Incisions may be revised to lower or conceal better if enough laxity exists. If unsightly scars are still present after approximately a year's time, other things that your surgeon may consider are intralesional steroid injections, laser, or just surgical revision of the scar itself. Hope that this helps! Best wishes!
