Thanks for your inquiry and an excellent question. Both are understanding and treatment of auto-immune conditions has greatly improved over the last 10-15 years. Frankly, many of us trained before some of these advancements and our literature is just catching up in identifying risk stratification. In general terms both the severity of your condition and the medications used will affect outcomes. Surgical plans often need to be modified so you can heal well. Please discuss your goals with both your rheumatologist and a plastic surgeon and best of luck.
Hello and thank you for your question. As long as your medical condition has been stable and has not caused a significant functional impairment, it should be O.K. to proceed. I would seek consultation with a board-certified plasticsurgeon for a full evaluation and advice. Best,PejmanAflaki, M.D.JohnsHopkins-trained double board-certified plastic surgeon
Your PS will require medical clearance from the rheumatologist or other specialist who is treating your scleroderma and want to know the severity of your condition and the medications you are taking before deciding if you are a good candidate for a MM.
Dear thwild1,It is hard to tell for sure without an examination. You will need to get a clearance from your doctor prior to any elective procedure. If you are considering a surgery, I would suggest you to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Only after a thorough examination you will get more information and recommendations.Daniel Barrett, MDCertified, American Board of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Plastic SurgeryMember, American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery
thwild1I appreciate your concerns and further information would be needed to provide a more detailed answer. Your plastic surgeon would need to know about all medications that you are presently taking for scleroderma and any other medical conditions. Also you should consult with your rheumatologist or other specialist treating your scleroderma as to the possibility of undergoing elective surgery. Finally, choose a board-certified plastic surgeon in your area to assist you in determining the possibility for mommy makeover surgery. Good luck.
I have experience with successfully performing cosmetic surgery procedures on patients with scleroderma. Your candidacy will depend on your overall health status and the medications you may be taking. I generally advise stopping any immunosuppressive medications prior to surgery with the support and blessings of your rheumatologist. It would be a good idea for you to get clearance from your rheumatologist prior to elective surgery. We would be happy to visit with your to help you with your journey. Best wishes,Dr. BasuHouston and Cypress, TX
You may still be a candidate for a Mommy Makeover despite your scleroderma. It will depend on the severity of your condition and how controlled it is. It is best to start with a visit to your rheumatologist to discuss your desire for a Mommy Makeover. If cleared for surgery you can then proceed to meet with a board certified plastic surgeon near you to discuss the surgery.
Thank you for the question. Tummy tuck procedures can be done safely for patients with a variety of different “medical conditions”. Careful evaluation and treatment of the medical condition is necessary prior to determining the appropriate candidates for the tummy tuck procedure. In your case this would be best done by a rheumatologist. The physicians who know your situation best would be best suited to discuss your suitability for the procedure and the potentially increased risks/ complications that you should consider. Also, please make sure you are seeking consultation with well experienced board-certified plastic surgeons who preferably work with board-certified anesthesiologists.I hope this helps. Best wishes.
hello thank you for contact, absolutely not! You have a higher risk of present problems of thrombosis during and after surgery.
Hello dear!!Thanks for the question and provided information as well.
